WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Bryan Muir, who had been acquired from the Los Angeles Kings Aug. 12, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Muir, 32, was originally signed by Edmonton as a free agent in 1996. He made his NHL debut with the Oilers in 1995-96 and also has played for New Jersey, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Colorado and the Kings. The 6' 4", 220-pound native of Winnipeg recorded one assist and two penalty minutes in two games with the Kings in 2003-04. He was acquired from the Kings in exchange for future considerations.

In nine NHL seasons Muir has totaled five goals, 15 assists (20 points) and 167 penalty minutes in 181 games. Muir played for the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche in 2000-01.

Prior to beginning his pro career in 1995-96, Muir played three seasons of college hockey with the University of New Hampshire in Hockey East. He played for the Canadian National Team in 1995-96 and was named to the AHL First All-Star Team in 2003-04 as a member of the Manchester Monarchs.
