Capitals Re-Sign Jeff Schultz to Four-Year Deal
ARLINGTON, VA. – The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Jeff Schultz to a four-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Schultz, 24, played 73 games for the Capitals in 2009-10 and led the NHL with a +50 rating, the best single-season rating in franchise history. He became the first defenseman to lead the NHL in plus/minus rating since 2005-06 (Michal Rozsival and Wade Redden) and the first Capital to lead the league in that category. Offensively he recorded career highs in assists (20) and points (23) and averaged a career-high 19:51 of ice time per game. He led the team with 129 blocked shots. The Calgary, Alberta, native was the Capitals’ first-round choice, 27th overall, in the 2004 Entry Draft. He has played in 247 career games for Washington, recording 56 points (nine goals, 47 assists) and just 97 penalty minutes. He has a +80 rating in his career. Comparitively speaking, is Shultz that bad of a deal when a guy like Hal Gill is making 2.25 a season, an a guy like Mike Komersarik is making 4.5 (average per season), not to either of those deals were great, but there price tags are what the market bears....

plus/minus is a joke especially in this case. coburn could have been +50 playing with green and usually with ovechkin and backstrom. schultz is not worth that much. if he wasn't playing with green, his numbers would be +10 with the same amount of points, which is very few.

Easily one of the softest players in the NHL. Just as he was in the AHL. He didnt have to CRUSH people with every check but he went out of his way to avoid contact. Yeah, plus/minus is a good indicator of a players effectiveness.

I'm am still in disbelief. McPhee's justification for doing absolutely nothing to improve the team was that he didnt want to overpay, and then he goes and hands 11 million dollars to Jeff fuckin Schultz.
