Capitals' John Erskine to Have Disciplinary Hearing

Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine faces a hearing on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET with the Department of Player Safety for his hit on Wayne Simmonds in a 3-2 victory Friday against the Philadelphia Flyers. The hearing will be held by phone. The grounds for the hearing are elbowing and illegal check to the head.

At the 18:14 mark of the first period, Erskine appeared to hit Simmonds in the head with his elbow on the play. No penalty was called. Simmonds left the game and did not return.

Washington plays its next game on Sunday afternoon, against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Wasn't there an incident with him a few seasons ago? I can't exactly remember what it was though. Either way I still don't think he's a cheap player, although that elbow looked pretty brutal last night. I don't think the intent to injure was there, probably more he thought if he didn't hit him Simmonds would make a move past him so he stuck his arm out not realizing Wayne was that far off and elbowed him right in the face. My guess is between 3-5 games, though I'd be fine with 3.

Craig Laughlin, who is usually fairly unbiased, defended the elbow last night when it happened, claiming that Erskine got his elbow up to, "defend himself."

Really?

It is going to be more than just a game or two.

It was blatant, Erskine really sticks the elbow out and also moves to his right to get into Simmonds. You can get a pretty good view of this at the 1:22 mark of the vid.

Don't forget, the incident also drew blood.

If he goes to play like that, he has to answer the bell he knows better. After he hit Kessel, Orr challenged him and he didn't want anything to do with it. Not sure if anyone did anything on the Flyers.

L Schenn skated down, but the camera's don't show any exchange. They panned back and the linesmen was guiding Schenn away.

The Flyers didn't have the guns to go after Erskine, esp. after Simmonds didn't return and Rinaldo got tossed. I would hope Shelly is inserted next game to hold Erskine accountable.

I don't think Erskine is a dirty player, rather a bonehead move that the Flyers have to address this year.

The excuse worked for James Neal.

I think Erskine will get a few games for it, but I'd rather he catch a beating next game. Rinaldo did the right thing, but someone still has to get to Erskine.

Clear hit to the head, with the intention of doing so. That is exactly the kind of thing the league wants to be rid of - he'll get 5 or 6 games.
