Capitals D Green Suspended 3 Games

The National Hockey League announced today that Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green has been suspended for three games, without pay, for an incident that took place during NHL game #802 against the Florida Panthers on January 29.

At 4:24 of the first period, Green delivered an elbow to the head of Panthers’ forward Michael Frolik. Green was assessed a minor penalty for elbowing on the play.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average salary, Green will forfeit $81,606.21. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Green will miss Washington's next three games – Jan. 31 against Tampa Bay, Feb. 2 at Boston and Feb. 4 at the New York Rangers. He will be eligible to return Feb. 5 against Atlanta.

Good this makes up for the suspension that he didnt get for the headshot on Jackman (I think) last year.

Fireball_IV 01-30-2010 01:12 PM

He's injured anyway isn't he?

Green should have gotten 10. But someone needs to explain to me how this got a suspension and Richards hit on Booth didn't.

Pretty easy to explain. Richards hit Booth legally with his shoulder, not to mention Green was looking for revenge. Green lead the whole way with his elbow. Looked like he was trying to do the "Cormier"

Also Green left the game with a "charley horse".....thats just sad.

I know it was legal, but it's still the type of hit that the NHL is trying to cut down on. I wish Green's knee would've blown out though.

Illegal hits to the head yes, but there is still no penalty for a clean hit, even if it unfortunately involves a shoulder to the head and an injury to the player being hit. If the form of the hit is clean, there should be no penalty or supplementary discipline on the play, unless it's a blatantly late hit.

I thought it should have been at least 5 and no more than 8. I'm surprised they suspended him at all to be honest.

DevsFan30 01-30-2010 02:19 PM

That was almost as ugly as Cormier's.

If an enforcer had done that it would have been at least 10 games.

Knucklechucker 01-30-2010 02:25 PM

I'm really suprised he got suspended.

Theres different standards for different teams and different players. which is a complete joke. It should be as simple as if you break this rule u get this many games, and if you do it again the suspension gets longer, they just make up amounts of games guys deserve based on there rep pretty much. im actually surprised they suspended green myself. H3ll it shocked me when they suspended ovechkin earlier in the yr. Im waiting to see if crosby will ever get suspended for fisting someones ass in a scrum
