Capitals Claim Staffan Kronwall Off Waivers

ARLINGTON, Va., - The Washington Capitals have claimed defenseman Staffan Kronwall off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Kronwall, 26, has played in 42 games for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season, where he has seven goals and 18 assists for 25 points. He led the Marlies in scoring for a defenseman and is tied for tenth in the league in scoring for a defenseman. Kronwall played in 18 games for the Maple Leafs last year and has played in 52 career NHL games for the Maple Leafs, recording one assist and 21 penalty minutes.

The 6'4", 210-pound Jarfalla, Sweden, native was selected by Toronto in the ninth round, 285th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Kronwall, who represented Sweden at the 2001 World Junior Championship, will wear No. 44 in Washington.

Based on today's practice, it looks like John Erskine might be a scratch since he was paired with Brian Pothier.
Boudreau cant be that dumb. Erskine has been playing great on the top defense pair with Mike Green and now he could be replaced by worthless Kronwall. Wonderful.

Kronwall is really not that good of player and definatly not good enough to play on a top defensive pair in the nhl, and since Erskine is doing so well with Green on that top pair i really can't see Boudreau changing that up. Kronwall is at best a sixth defencemen in the nhl in my opinion.

Great news for Toronto!

One less Euro-puss on the roster, plus we sent Stralman down yesterday while we were at it! Mr.Burke, find that good old Canadian D-Man to replace Kronwall for next year.

Enjoy Washington.
