ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have assigned defenseman Brian Fahey and goaltender Braden Holtby to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Fahey, 29, has played four games for the Capitals this season, including his NHL debut Oct. 16 at Nashville. The 6’1”, 215-pound native of Des Plaines, Ill., has recorded seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) and a +7 rating in 13 games for the Bears this season. He has played 503 career games at the AHL and ECHL level combined. Fahey was signed as a free agent July 7, 2010.

Holtby has posted a 2-2-1 record with a 3.84 goals-against average and a .850 save percentage in five games with the Capitals this season. He recorded his first career NHL win against the Boston Bruins on Nov. 5 and followed up with a 23-save performance in his first career start, a 3-2 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 7 at Verizon Center. Holtby, who became the third straight Capitals goaltender to start his career 2-0-0, has played in five games for the Bears this season, posting a record of 4-0-1 with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage. The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, native was the Capitals’ fourth-round choice, 93rd overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
