Capitals Agree to Terms With Troy Brouwer

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed right wing Troy Brouwer to a two-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Brouwer, 25, recorded 17 goals and a career-high 19 assists for 36 points in 79 regular-season games in 2010-11. He led the Blackhawks and ranked fifth in the NHL with 262 hits and finished third on the team with five game-winning goals. Brouwer appeared in all seven playoff games with Chicago, collecting 11 penalty minutes and finishing with a plus-two rating.

The 6’3”, 215-pound forward helped lead the Blackhawks to win the 2010 Stanley Cup while tallying a career-best eight points (four goals, four assists) in 19 playoff contests.

During the 2009-10 campaign, Brouwer registered a career-high 22 goals and 40 points in 69 games with the Blackhawks. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native ranked third on the club with a career-high seven power-play goals despite ranking seventh in power-play ice time. In 238 career NHL games with Chicago, Brouwer has recorded 103 points (49 goals, 54 assists).

Brouwer was originally drafted by Chicago in the seventh round (214th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

They can be over the cap by 10% until October, so they can take their time making the right trade.

he's a good physical player that can help any team.
He did not earn this pay raise, however he does bring a lot of intangibles to a team in need of a power forward.

The Hawks could not afford to double his salary, as the Caps have, and still do what they felt was needed to get the team past the first round of the playoffs.

Coming off the cup win, the salary cap played hell with the Hawks.

The 'Hawks cap issues were self-inflicted. I mean, didn't you have 12 million tied up in backup goalies? Sure, you did have a lot of young guys that were going to need large raises, but that Cup was substantially leveraged against the future of the organization. The ever-increasing salary cap isn't the cause of current or future Blackhawks' troubles, team management is, but it got you the Stanley Cup. Last year.

he's been expandable in my mind for years....can't wait for ever for a 2004 1st rounder to become the first line player you thought he would be. He's one of gabby's boys from hershey who he pretty much refuses to part with, que jeff shultz

they need to dump shultz or poti, they're stocked with worthless defensemen and they haven't even signed Alzner yet.

I would have loved to keep Brouwer but I blame overpriced goalies and a way overpriced defenseman that we got rid of a year too late (happy as hell he and his overpriced contract are finally gone) is what killed the Cup team.

Now if Hossa would stop getting injured and play a full season, he might be worth what they are paying him.
