Capitals Acquire Scott Hannan
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Scott Hannan from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Tomas Fleischmann, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Hannan, 31, is an 11-year NHL veteran who has played for Colorado and the San Jose Sharks. The 6’1”, 225-pound defensive defenseman has played 775 career games, recording 30 goals, 150 assists, 456 penalty minutes and a +22 rating. This season Hannan has six assists and a +1 rating while playing all 23 games for the Avalanche. Hannan has played at least 71 games in each of his 11 pro seasons, including 97.2% of the games since he made the NHL full-time in 2000-01. He has averaged 18:37 of ice time per game this season and 22:02 per game in the course of his career. His teams have made the playoffs eight times in 10 seasons prior to this one, playing a total of 73 playoff games. A first-round pick of the Sharks, 23rd overall, in the 1997 Entry Draft, Hannan broke into the league after an all-star career with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. He was a teammate of current Capital Matt Bradley with the Sharks and signed with Colorado as a free agent on July 1, 2007. Last edited by Thrillhouse; 11-30-2010 at 01:01 PM. |

Seems like a steal for the Avs. As I remember Hannan was having problems staying healthy. Not to mention his cap hit is a bit bigger I think. Anyway Hannan has to play better then Poti, so it is a win-win.

Avs deal Hannan to Caps in return for FleischmannTuesday, 11.30.2010 / 12:42 PM / News NHL.com 0 ShareThe Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Scott Hannan from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for center Tomas Fleischmann on Tuesday. The Caps felt they needed a big, physical defender and are getting just that in Hannan. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound bruiser turned 31 in January and was in the middle of his fourth season with the Avs after spending the first eight seasons of his career with the San Jose Sharks. He has been among the Avs' leaders in hits and blocked shots over the past few years. Hannan came at a price, as Fleischmann was beginning to emerge as a reliable scorer with the Caps. The 26-year-old was off to a slow start this season with just 4 goals in 23 games, but he had 19 goals two seasons ago and 23 last season. "First and foremost, I would like to thank Scott Hannan for his services to our organization and wish him the best," said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman. "In Tomas we are acquiring a top-six forward who is only 26 years old. His addition will bolster our lineup immediately." The Avs' next game is Tuesday at home against the Atlanta Thrashers at 10 p.m. ET. The Capitals will be in St. Louis to face the Blues on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EMAIL ›| |MORE SHARE › |PRINT ›|COMMENT › WIN- AVS. This deal fking disgust me. I just saw this, and I had a similar reaction. Flash was one of the up and coming young guys in our system, and we deal him so quick into his NHL career?

Scott Hannan plays damn near every game of every season. Good deal for both clubs. The Caps needed to gain a defensive defenseman, and Scott Hannan fits that mold to a D. With some other defensive minded blue liners ready to go in Colorado, he became expandable for a cheaper option.

I'll admit I haven't seen a ton of Hannan's play recently, but I have always thought he was a pretty solid defensive rearguard. He may come with a bit of a high pricetag right now, but I think he's a good acquisition for the Caps especially thinking forward to the playoffs. They needed to give something to get something though, and I can understand why some are less than thrilled at giving up Fleischmann, but I think Washington's key players on offense are young and deep enough that they'll end up being just fine.
