Capitals Acquire Jason Arnott; Send Steckel, Draft Pick to New Jersey

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have acquired center Jason Arnott from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for center Dave Steckel and a second round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Arnott, 36, is a 19-year NHL veteran who has played for the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators and the Devils. The 6’5’’, 220-pound center has appeared in 1,161 career NHL games, recording 369 goals, 501 assists and 1,208 penalty minutes. In addition, Arnott has collected 66 points (30 goals, 36 assists) and 74 penalty minutes in 106 career playoff games. A two-time NHL All-Star (1997, 2008), Arnott won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2000, scoring the game-winning goal in the second overtime period.

This season, Arnott has 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) and 32 penalty minutes while playing in 62 games for the Devils. He ranks third on the team in goals and fourth in points. The Collingwood, Ontario native was drafted by the Oilers, seventh overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft and was named to the NHL All-Rookie team the following season.

Steckel, 28, registered 11 points (five goals, six assists) and 24 penalty minutes in 57 games with the Capitals this season. In 291 career NHL games, all with Washington, Steckel has recorded 58 points (23 goals, 35 assists) and 113 penalty minutes. The 6’5’’, 217-pound center was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, 30th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Even though the Devils have been on an incredible run the last 20 games or so, I still had a feeling Arnott was gonna be traded (36 yrs old, going to be a UFA, etc.).

I'm really interested to see who we got.

*edit*

Please tell me we got something other than Steckel

Dave "Crosby Killer" Steckel

Thats a good trade. Lou delivered on this one. Arnott has not earned his keep for the money he was making in the last 10 games or so.

So much for Caps and Pens games getting more rowdy, not that they were anyways.

hell of a face off guy, good PK player

but he doesn't have an offensive bone in his body.... not sure how wsh fits Arnott under the cap

I read an article just the other day that Arnott wanted out of New Jersey. Probably wanted another shot at a cup.

Steckel and a 2nd rd. pick.

Washington did a good job of getting nothing done by making it seem like they got something done today.

The deal has been updated and the Devils got a 2nd round pick in 2012 as well.

Caps seem intent on getting a bunch of vets the last few years without really fixing their main issue. I don't believe that Neuvirth or Varlamov are really just there quite yet, adding Arnott doesn't really do much for them.
