Canucks Sign Jason Garrison

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed defenceman Jason Garrison to a six-year deal.

Garrison, 27, recorded 33 points (16-17-33) and 32 penalty minutes in 77 games with the Florida Panthers last season. With 16 goals during the 2011.12 season, Garrison set a franchise single season record among defenceman while averaging 23:41 in time on ice. In four playoff games, Garrison earned three points (1-2-3). The White Rock, British Columbia native has played 190 career NHL games with the Florida scoring 23 goals, 36 assists (23-36-59) and logging 81 penalty minutes.

The 6’2”, 220-pound undrafted defenceman was signed by the Panthers in 2008 after three seasons with the University of Minnesota Duluth of the WCHA.

My bad, I thought I'd read where it was a re-signing.

Not a surprise to see teams paying a guy this much for one good season. Seems to be the norm in the league so far.

Wow that's a lot of money and tenure!

Garrison had a great year and brings one hell of a shot to the table. I can't say I'm surprised that he got a ton of money thrown his way. But it's still horrifying to see that big of a commitment to a guy who had one season of success.

If he hit Gillis wouldn't have signed him.

Anyway he isn't known for hitting. Don't expect much of that.

Nice to know 1 good year gets you almost $30 million.

Like I said before, the salary cap increase makes GM's lose their damn minds.
