Canucks Sign Burrows to Four-Year Deal

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that forward Alexandre Burrows has agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension through the 2012-13 NHL season. Burrows is currently playing his fourth season as a Vancouver Canuck.

“Alex plays with intensity and determination at both ends of the rink,” said Mike Gillis. “He’s a fierce competitor and a versatile player. We look forward to further growth and development in his game.”

Burrows, 27, has set new career highs this season with 16 goals, 33 points (16-17-33) and 105 penalty minutes in 62 games played. Including the 2008-09 season, Burrows has 85 points (38-47-85) and 438 penalty minutes through 268 career NHL games with Vancouver.

The 6’1”, 197 lbs. native of Pincourt, Quebec originally signed with Vancouver as a free agent on November 8, 2005.

Good stuff - a pretty fair deal, imo, for a player who has been one of the Canucks best and hardest working members for about a year now. He gets some flak on this site and not a lot of people like him - heck, I don't blame them - but Burrows has come a long way since he came into the league and has turned himself into a pretty good hockey player.

This will stop those trade rumours started by Pierre Lebrun on HNIC's Hot Stove last Saturday.

I hate the guy, but he has developed into a pretty good player for the Canucks. Not a bad move by Gillis to extend him. Anyone hear any word on the money yet?

Very good deal. He's taken his game to a whole new level this year.

Who would have expected burrows, a fourth line super pest to turn into a First line superstar in only a year!

Playing with the Sedins does that. Just ask Anson Carter.

I like Burrows, but he should hope that he continues to play with the Sedins, especially in the last year of that contract.

It honestly doesn't change much. As much as the scoring helps, he's not really relied on for it. He's doing great with the Sedins, but he's not a permanent top 6 guy. He's being signed as a checker and a heart and soul guy, and for his overall package I think $2 million is a steal.

I like him, watched him come up with the Moose. Good hard-working guy, but I bet he is even surprised with $2 million a year. I was thinking $1.5 million.

This really is a solid signing for Vancouver. I don't want to praise them too much; the good news is that I get to continue to hate him playing for that loser squad in Vancouver
