Canucks Sign Aaron Volpatti
6'2" and 215 pound forward out of Brown.
Supposed to play a rough and tumble style, and able to get up and down the ice pretty well. Career PIM leader at Brown. http://canucks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=522306 Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed forward Aaron Volpatti to a multi-year deal. Volpatti, 24, joins the Canucks from Brown University, where he served as team captain in his senior year. In the 2009-10 season, the Revelstoke, BC native recorded 32 points (17-15-32) in 37 games played. He set the school record for most penalty minutes in a season with 115 in 2009-10. Volpatti played four seasons with Brown, registering 62 points (32-30-62) and 236 penalty minutes in 123 career college games. Prior to college, Volpatti played for the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL. From the 2003-04 to 2005-06 seasons, the 6’2”, 215-pound forward tallied 37 points (13-24-37) and 279 penalty minutes in 137 games. He also appeared in the 2004 BCHL Playoffs, recording one goal and five penalty minutes in five games. In his final season with the Vipers, Volpatti was named an assistant captain. |

He's the all-time penalty minute leader at Brown, and he asked the ref for a misconduct so he could get the record!

Thats interesting, I was just reading about Volpatti in my new issue of the Hockey News tonight, and how he'd be one of the top sought after FAs out of the college ranks this spring - good to see the Canucks get the jump on him and add another prospect to the pile. BC boy too.
I really like how Gillis is thinking outside the box and scouring the college leagues for prospects the last couple years instead of just Europe or the CHL.

So, yes Volpatti put up some nice numbers this yr, but he was probably the oldest guy in the league, and playing against guys who were mostly 18,19,20 and 21 yrs of age. In 3 yrs in the BCJHL (142 games) he had 38 points. In his first 3 years in College he had 30 points in total. Is he a late bloomer, or just benefitting from being so much more physically mature than everyone he plays against??? Same applies to his toughness. He is a lot more physically mature than most of the guys he plays against. Can he be a tough guy when he may be smaller than most of the guys he's asked to rough it up with??? |
