Canucks Salo Out With Concussion

CANUCKS' SALO HAS CONCUSSION; MARCHAND HEARING EXPECTED

Quote:
Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo has a concussion after he took a low-bridge hit from Brad Marchand during Saturday's game in Boston.

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis delivered the news Sunday. Marchand was assessed a clipping major and game misconduct for the hit that flipped Salo over in the Boston zone late in the second period.

Play was stopped after the hit, and after a few moments Salo was able to skate off the ice on his own. The blueliner did not return to the game.

Marchand is expected to have a hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan to discuss the incident on Monday, although the meeting has not officially been set.

The 23-year-old Marchand has been suspended before. He was given a two-game ban last March for an elbow to the head of Columbus forward R.J. Umberger.

Marchand was also fined $2,500 last month for slew-footing Pittsburgh defenceman Matt Niskanen.

The Canucks earned a spirited 4-3 win over the Bruins on Saturday in the first meeting between the teams since the Stanley Cup Final last year.

Marchand is a Bruin, so he'll get 1 game max.

I figured he got injured (since it's Sami Salo after all), but I didn't expect to him to get a concussion from that.

It's too bad he got hurt. He was going in for a big hit and got submarined. I'm still not convinced Marchand clipped him, you just never see hip checks anymore.

I thought Salo might have had a shoulder injury from that hit from the way he skated off the ice. As for Marchand, I agree that Salo turned away from him at the last second, but still think it's a dirty hit by a dirty rat of a player. But I don't think he should be suspended.

Well, the way he landed on the back of his head, I kinda figured it might be a concussion - early speculation was that it was a shoulder injury, but I'm not surprised by this news. Funny though, out of all the injuries Salo has suffered before in his career, I'm not sure a concussion has ever been one of them. Now he's probably done everything.

Marchand is fuked. Between the league's harsh cracking down on any kind of hit involving a head injury, the nature of the hit, and Marchand's history, I'm gonna bet Marchand gets 5 games for this - but I'm with Hump, I'd also like to see him castrated....

Poor Salo - it was only a matter of time before another major injury took him out of the lineup. He was due.

Sounds an awful lot like when the Sabres claimed Miller had a concussion right before Lucic had his hearing....

“The puck was going around the boards and I went to pick it up,” said Marchand. “I was looking over my shoulder and saw Salo coming. I just kind of went down. When you see a guy 6-foot-(3) coming in on you, your instincts are to protect yourself. It was very unfortunate that he was hurt on the play.

“In a game like last night, where there was a lot of emotion and guys were running around a bit, you’re definitely watching out a little bit more. You want to try to protect yourself. When you have a guy coming in on you, you have no idea what his intentions are or what the outcome may be.

“I’ve seen the replay. I did go under him, but I felt like the base contact was about at the hip point. That’s usually a pretty legal hit, from what I’ve seen in the past. I have no idea how the league feels about it, so we’ll see. It’s a hit in the game. Guys on our team use it, guys on other teams use it.”

“I had no intention of hurting Salo on the play. I was just trying to protect myself. He’s a very big body coming and I’m not the biggest guy. I’ve done that a lot in the past. I’ve never been punished for it before.”

I could be mistaken but wasn't it Marchand who got all up in arms a few years ago when he went for a hit on a Russian in the super series or world juniors and got low bridged?? I remember talk of taking a hit like a man and it being cowardly....wierd.

Put me in for 4 games. Merchand has a history and Salo was injured.

I don't buy the "I'm protecting myself" argument here.

Brad Marchand upends Daniel Sedin Jun 8, 2011 ...

Is that the same argument you'd use when Danielle Sedin is coming at you?

I don't care for clipping or low bridging in the least bit. IMO, it's an easy, cowardice way to take out knees, and there is a reason it's looked down upon greatly in the hockey world.

I can see him getting a few games, despite getting nothing for the same kind of hit as last year.

I honestly thought Marchand's slewfoot was much worse. Given his history now,the 'lil ball of hate should probably get 2-3 games. After numorous replays,i dont see a clipping penalty there per the rules. In protecting himself from a larger play coming at him,he hit him in the upper thigh, and submarined him over his shoulder. If thats worthy of a suspension, then so be it. I know it was a differant time, but Galley and Don Sweeney used to do this frequently. Hell, even Bourque! Differant times i guess. I initially heard Salo had seperated his shoulder, now im hearing it's a concussion.

Ya I here Marchand spent a weekend with Greg Campbell and his dad this summer so Collys gunna call Shannahan and tell him that hes not allowed to suspend Marchand.

3 games, dirty hit for a player that I have no use for on my team. I really hate the "rats" and Marchand is no exception. Yes he does score more than the other rats around the league but to me Hes the type of player thats wrong with todays game.

Could of been worse, at least its not another puck to the nuts for Salo.
