Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that defenceman Nathan McIver has been re-assigned to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL.

McIver, 23, has split the 2007-08 season between the Manitoba Moose and Vancouver Canucks. He recorded 36 penalty minutes in 11 games with the Canucks and six points (3-3-6) and 83 penalty minutes in 38 games with the Moose.

McIver, made his NHL debut during the 2006-07 season, playing one game with the Canucks. The 6-foot-2, 205 lbs. native of Summerside, Prince Edward Island played 63 games with the Moose last season, recording 139 penalty minutes.

According to the Team 1040 out of Vancouver McIver may be in the lineup tonight due to Ohlund's injury.

Anyone know why he was even assigned to Victoria in the first place? From the NHL to the ECHL in less than a month.

Has anyone been called up and sent down as much as McIver this season? The guy is up and down like a yo-yo.

Are the Canucks that close to the salary cap that they have to keep bouncing him up and down?

The Canuck's d has been decimated by injuries this season.

I think he is getting sent down/called up repeatedly for a few reasons.
He's a young guy that needs to play. He's not going to get a lot of ice in Vancouver (if he dresses at all).

There is also the issue of the roster size. If the Canuck's can have a Salo, Bieksa, Mitchell etc... in the line up at 60%, they'd rather do that than play McIvar.
Due to so many guys being banged up, often times it is a game time decision if an established starter can play.

Anyways, it is great for McIvar. He was a real long shot to ever play an NHL game. He's gotten a few games in under his belt, and I am sure he appreciates the HUGE pay raise he gets when he's called up. He's getting paid the NHL minimum (which is way more than his AHL salary) whenever he is called up, dressed or not dressed.

Yes, getting sent to Victoria is not an indication of his game, it is done so b/c he will be called right back up. Victoria is minutes from Vancouver (by boat), while Manitoba is hours away (by plane).

Anthony Stewart and Tanner Glass of the Panthers might have given him a run for his money.
