Canucks Re-Sign Mattias Ohlund

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager and Senior Vice President Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have re-signed defenceman Mattias Ohlund to a new multi-year contract.

"We are extremely pleased to have come to terms with Mattias," said Dave Nonis. "He has proven himself to be one of the premier defencemen in this league and we are thrilled that he will be wearing a Canucks jersey to start the 2005-06 season. Mattias’ leadership and on-ice stability are a huge boost for our hockey club."

During the past year, Ohlund participated in the World Cup of Hockey for Sweden, tallying one goal in two games played. He also joined Lulea HF in Sweden for a total of two games over the Christmas break, scoring one goal.

Ohlund, 28, has been one of the Canucks’ top defencemen since his rookie season of 1997-98. In 480 career games, all with Vancouver, Ohlund has recorded 54 goals, 158 assists (212 points) and 400 penalty minutes. He has also played 30 NHL Playoff games with the Canucks. For his accomplishments on the ice, he has been named to the 1998 NHL All-Rookie Team and to the World All-Star Team in 1999. The 2005-2006 season will mark Ohlund’s eighth season with the club.

The native of Pitea, Sweden made an immediate impact during his rookie year. He led all NHL rookie defencemen in points with 30, was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie team, and finished second in Calder Trophy voting to Boston’s Sergei Samsonov.

Ohlund also has extensive international experience, having represented Sweden on numerous occasions. He was a member of Sweden’s World Junior Team in 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97. He represented Sweden at the 1997 and 2001 World Hockey Championships and since the NHL’s participation in the Olympics began, Ohlund has been named to Sweden’s Olympic hockey team twice: 1998 and 2002. During the Winter Olympic Games, Ohlund has recorded three points (0-3-3) in eight games played.

Ohlund stands 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds and was Vancouver’s 1st choice, 13th overall, in the 1994 Entry Draft.
