Canucks Re-Sign Dale Weise to One-Year Contract

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have agreed to terms in lieu of arbitration on a one-year deal with right wing Dale Weise.

Weise, 23, registered eight points (4-4-8) and 81 penalty minutes in 68 games with Vancouver during the 2011.12 season. In 78 NHL games with the Canucks and New York Rangers, the 6’2”, 210 lbs. winger has registered eight points (4-4-8) and 100 penalty minutes.

The Winnipeg, MB, native was originally selected by the Rangers in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round, 111th overall.

Canucks are going to need this guy, considering they are a little short on guys who can drop them, Volpatti and Kassian are the only other two to deal with the rough stuff.

Agreed. When Gillis came in, he signed Hordichuk right away, now this is the state of the team...they are relying on Weise and/or Volpatti to take care of business albeit in a weak Western Conference. Expect another "star" to be knocked out without a deterrent.

This is pathetic...

Oh c'mon... don't hate on the guy just because he was 0-8-0 last year on his fight card :approve:

It's actually quite funny... the guy is a career 1-13 - 0 in his career card in the NHL (including preseason) and he still has a job...

He has 8 points in 78 career NHL games, loses every fight he's in and he still has a job? There are better role players available the Canucks could have grabbed... I don't understand this.

I think they want him cause he is a big body , not for his fighting. someone who'll go into the dirty areas willingly. more so come playoff time when there arent alot of name brand fighters being dressedthat he'll have to worry about. unfortuneatly he has to go through alot of lumps throughout the season to get there.

I hear ya... I just think there are other "big bodies" around that can be more effective, and aren't literal punching bags...

a guy like say JF Jacques? He had a 4 goal game in the AHL (i.e. he's got some talent), and can hold his own in a fight...

He'll hit anything.

You could get him for a 5-7 round pick straight up.

That's all I'm saying.

FurnaceFace 07-25-2012 10:39 PM

i would take Jean-Francois Jacques over weise in a heartbeat !. but the nucks wont. they have been low balling players with two way contracts and as a result of we get dale weise :B) I am with you on this one. Sadly our prayers and pleads go unheard.

Guy has heart but he is just a hired punching bag. Better than nothing though, Cote got his fame by doing the exact same thing.

Not quite. Cote was an exciting fighter, regardless of his W/L record. Can't say the same for Weise; he's boring as all hell.

FightsOfHockey 07-27-2012 07:22 PM

probably the worst fighter in the league, reminds me of former Canuck Jeff Cowan a bit. minor scoring skill, can't fight at all.

Also damn streaky in his fights only seems to fight once a month.

I feel Pinizotto will do a lot of heavy lifting for Vancouver and Volpatti a secondary enforcer with Weise bringing up the rear.

ThrowdownSJ408 07-27-2012 09:59 PM

JF Jac has a little mean streak in him I like and is much tougher the Weise. Weise is a joke. Volplatti is pretty legit. Hope he stays healthy.

FurnaceFace 07-27-2012 10:37 PM

i think the problem here is now that Jeff Cowan was mentioned. i think goes for the same as dale weise here, that is.... we have guys who arent real heavies or middles but are willing to drop the gloves, get put into bigger roles than they can handle and get used and abused by their club and everyone else for that matter.

It was a shame what they... as in vancouver turned Jeff Cowan into. maybe the same goes for dale "punching bag" weise.. without a heavyweight to protect everyone the next biggest guy steps in , and the next biggest guy isnt always the toughest.
