Canucks Place Manny Malhotra on IR; Malhotra Out for Rest of '12-13 Season

Vancouver, B.C. – The Vancouver Canucks announced today that centre Manny Malhotra has been placed on Injured Reserve and will miss the remainder of the 2012.13 NHL season.

“The long term health of Manny Malhotra is of utmost importance to our organization,” said Michael D. Gillis, President and General Manager, Canucks Sports & Entertainment. “Throughout his career Manny has showcased his indispensability through skilled play, being a consummate professional and leader in the room while also continuously giving back to the community. Manny will continue to be a valued member of our organization.”

Wow. I think he's done after the eye injury, had a very good career though.

Awe I was hoping waviers. Or trade.

Good luck with the recovery Manny, Good pro and good all round guy, I'm sure he will stick around behind the scenes.

It's a real shame, but Manny just hasn't been the same since he nearly lost his eye and his skills have eroded to the point where the Canucks didn't have much choice but to let him go.

I feel bad for Manny and I wish it hadn't come to this, but with Kesler ready to come back and Schroeder performing well, in the end this became a hockey decision. But Gillis is spinning it to make it appear that they're shutting him down as if they're worried but his overall health, something of a PR move in an attempt to NOT make themselves look like the bad guys, but I think most Canuck fans had a feeling this was coming.

Putting Manny on IR allows him to finish the season - and perhaps his career - with some dignity - and his entire salary. He still gets paid, but it obviously won't count against the cap. Its much better than being outright released, placed on waivers, banished to the minors, or shovelled off to another team for a 7th rounder or future considerations.

I don't know if he'll ever play again - I hope someone else will give him a chance next season - if not, I think he'd make a great coach and mentor, esp when it comes to teaching faceoffs. All the best to you, Manny!

I missed it, what happened to my fellow brown man, another eye injury?

FurnaceFace 02-15-2013 12:53 AM

If the nucks do what canuckfans says I think it is classy. If he plans to retire at the end of the season. Correct me if I am wrong .. If someone is on the extended IR then that player doesnt count against the cap???
Manny can still skate with the team. And play if needed playoff time if he feels he can play in the playoffs. So it kinda gives the nucks options in all areas without giving up on manny.

I kinda have given up on him. Before the eye injury he said some thing in the media joinin the anti fighting side . And stopped being aggresive as he used to be and wouldnt fight anymore. That was pre eye injury.. his eye is at risk always, not sure if this why he is on the IR, so really... can he give 100 %? if he stays or goes im on the fence.

He's on regular IR, not on LTIR as the Canucks have enough cap room currently to where a call-up won't put them over the cap.

Never liked him no matter what team he was on. The eye injury was unfortunate but he's nothing but a 4th liner anyways.
