Canucks Place Keith Ballard On LTIR w/Concussion

Quote:
VAN put Keith Ballard on LTIR, Creates $4.2M worth of cap space. May be setting up for deal. Maybe I Ott to look into that.

On VAN, Ballard has concussion. He's not close. Best bet he's maybe OK for playoffs. Won't play before then.

LTIR - Usually reserved for a player with a significant injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Allows a team to use his cap space to acquire another player or players.

IR - Usually for an injured player who will be back during the regular season. Cap hit still counts and can't be used on another player or players.

so any player placed on ltir wont play till the end of the season even if he is healthy, right?

That's correct. He would, however, be eligible to play in the playoffs.

Hmmm seems suspicious... like one of those

GM Mike Gillis: "Hey Ballard, we can either bury you in the minors or place you on LTIR until the playoffs"

Ballard:"...Ummm I'd prefer LTIR"

GM MG: "Fine."

wrong...its for a player who is gonna miss 10 games or 30 days and can only be used for a team that would be over the cap when a call-up is made to replace that injured player.

also it does not mean the player is out for the season by any means either.

Yeah, I kinda wonder that too, because for the life of me I cannot recall how or exactly when Ballard first got hurt. I know he hasn't played in almost a month, and he really hasn't been much better than last season when he was healthy. Ballard's career as a Canuck has so far been a wash.

But, shutting him down for the next 20 games may help and hopefully he can be ready to go again by playoffs. And this will open the door, clear some cap space for either a Steve Ott type forward and maybe another depth d-man, which may be more important if Ballard's future is so unclear right now.
