Canucks Deal Jesse Schultz to Thrashers for Jimmy Sharrow

The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired forward Jesse Schultz from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defenseman Jimmy Sharrow, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.

Schultz, 24, spent the majority of last season with the Manitoba Moose (AHL), recording 39 points (18 goals, 21 assists) in 67 games. He was held scoreless in his first two career NHL games with the Canucks.

The 6-0, 192-pound right wing has tallied 131 points (64 goals, 67 assists) in 219 career games with Manitoba. He added 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 34 career Calder Cup Playoff contests. In 2003-04, Schultz spent his only season in the ECHL, registering 48 points (27 goals, 21 assists) in 52 games with the Columbia Inferno. The native of Strasbourg, Saskatchewan spent four seasons in the WHL with Tri-City, Prince Albert, and Kelowna. He recorded 229 points (110 goals, 119 assists) in 272 career games. Schultz was originally signed as a free agent by Vancouver on July 31, 2003.

Sharrow, drafted by Atlanta in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, appeared in 42 games for the Chicago Wolves (AHL) last season, recording 18 points (four goals, 14 assists). Born in Framingham, MA, Sharrow has notched 37 points (six goals, 31 assists) in 89 career games with the Wolves. He split the 2005-06 season between Chicago and the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL). Prior to turning pro, the 6-2, 195-pound defenseman spent three seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL), recording 101 points (30 goals, 71 assists) in 191 games.

Sharrow's got a lot of offensive upside but questionable in his own end and prone to turnovers. not sure if he's improved on that since going pro.

Isn't Sharrow a fairly highly-touted prospect? That'd be sweet, cuz Jesse Schultz is unlikely to ever see significant time in the bigs. Good trade for the Canucks.

I saw Sharrow a couple of times with the Glads...He looked to be the best D-man on the ice.

Having seen him play...the knock on Sharrow has been his D-play in his own zone. I think he'd rather be a winger.

They tried him as in winger in Halifax and it didn't work, he's better as a d-man but needs to tighten up in his own end.
