Canucks Claim Tom Sestito off Waivers from Flyers; Assign Andrew Ebbett to AHL

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have claimed left wing Tom Sestito off of waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers. Andrew Ebbett was re-assigned to the Chicago Wolves.

Sestito, 25, appeared in seven games, collecting two goals, including one game-winner, and 12 penalty minutes with the Philadelphia Flyers this season. He also played one game, recording two penalty minutes, with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL. The Rome, New York native has collected seven career points (4-3-7) in 34 NHL games played with the Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets.

The 6’5”, 228-pound forward was originally selected in the third round, 85th overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

So they waive Volpatti, and pick up Sestito? Did Volpatti do something to earn his ticket out of Vancouver? These 2 are very similar. Strange

I guess they realized they made a mistake with Volpatti.

What's funny is the Oilers must of passed on Sestito. They are lower in the standings than Vancouver so they could have had him.

I'd take Volpatti over Sestito any day. Dumb move by the Nucks....

If they are that similar then I'd rather have the 6'5 version. Sestito hasn't fought many true heavyweights but with his size he is better suited to go up against guys like McGrattan and Bordy than Volpatti would have been.

I like that line with Shelly and Sestito it's a nice feeling to know those two are dressed isn't it folks!! Jets are pretty quiet #PRESENCE-- tweeted by Todd Fedoruk 1/31/12

I don't either. I'm just saying there is a better chance of him being able to handle himself against them if he needed to than Volpatti, so in that sense it's a marginal upgrade.

Interesting move at least Philly still has Shelley if he ever plays another game and gets off the fake IR....Volpatti must be headed to the minors, because if nobody wanted McCormick, I'm guessing Volpatti will be over looked as well.

Volpatti was claimed by Washington and he'll most likely play there.

I think the reason nobody wanted Cody McCormick was because his contract is too much money. He makes something like $1.2 million which is sort of a lot for a guy like him. Guys like Volpatti and Sestito are basically free.

Hopefully this and the departure of Shelley forces the Flyers hand to get a true heavyweight this off season.
