Canucks Add Andrew Alberts From Hurricanes

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have acquired defenceman Andrew Alberts from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a 2010 third-round draft selection.

Alberts, 28, has played in 62 games this season for the Carolina Hurricanes, registering 10 points (2-8-10), 74 penalty minutes and a plus-7 ranking. The Minneapolis, MN, native has played in 325 NHL games, collecting 42 points (4-38-42) and 366 penalty minutes. In eight NHL playoff games he has registered one point (0-1-1) and 10 penalty minutes.

The 6’5”, 218-pound defenceman was originally drafted in the sixth round, 179th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Well, there's the depth defenseman we've been talking about the Canucks acquiring all day, for an OK cost as well.

With Bieksa still a ways away from playing, Mitchell perhaps done for the year, and Salo expected to get hurt again, this was a must. Alberts can jump into the third pairing, eat some minutes, and provide some grit on the backend. Not a bad trade, definitley better than nothing. I'd take Alberts over Baumgartner and maybe even Rome right now, so this is good.

I was fine with Alberts, but seems like we were trying to squeeze out any picks from wherever we could.

this one doesn't thrill me. i liked alberts better than that 3rd round pick. carolina has also lost some of their grit and team toughness today between him and walker. gleason can't fight everyones battles.

we knew they had to pick up somebody and Alberts went for a nice price. I didnt hate him when he was a Flyer.

I think this is a good deal for the Nuk's. Always liked Alberts with the Flyers, good soild D-man who plays gritty. I hated to see him leave but cap issues made it impossible to keep him.
