Canucks Acquire Shane O'Brien and Michel Ouellet From Tampa Bay

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have acquired defenceman Shane O’Brien and right wing Michel Ouellet in exchange for defenceman Lukas Krajicek and right wing Juraj Simek from the Tampa Bay Lightning. O’Brien will report to Vancouver and Ouellet will report to Manitoba.

O’Brien, 25, spent the 2007-08 season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, recording 21 points (4-17-21) in 77 games played. The Port Hope, Ontario-native has played in 158 NHL games, scoring six goals and 31 assists for a total of 37 points and recording 330 penalty minutes. The 6’2”, 235-pound defenceman was selected in the eighth round, 250th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks.

Ouellet, 26, has played in 187 career NHL games with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh, registering 116 points (52-64-116). The 6’0”, 201-pound right wing was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team in 2004. Born in Rimouski, Quebec, Ouellet was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round, 124th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

LOL at the Lightning, they got even softer. Not a bad trade value wise though.

Awesome. I love O'Brien, and Krajicek was way too soft. Simek's nothing special either.

Here's a question though, Ouelett's already cleared waivers, right? So we can assign him to the Moose, correct?

Next thing you know Tampa Bay is going to try and sign Kristina Yamaguchi and Nancy Kerrigan to shore up their defense. They are pathetic.

Good job Canucks! Wtf is up with Tampa? Ditching Konopka, benching Koci, getting rid of O'Brien, damn.

I think the years of exposure to dangerous amounts of hair gel have finally turned Barry Melrose's brain to mush!

Awesome - the blue line gets tougher, and we get some more scoring depth on the farm.

Steve - you're right, Ouellet is already headed to the farm. The Canucks can call this guy up if injures hit some scoring forwards hard - if not, its more depth and scoring for the Moose.

I think this is a great trade for the Canucks. They were a little taken back when McIver was nabbed off waivers by the Ducks - all of a sudden depth, more specifically, toughness depth on the blue line, was a concern - especially with a few more cuts coming like Lawrence Nycholat, who would have to clear waivers first if he's sent down and has had a good pre-season.

If he is claimed by another team, losing another depth d-man with grit and toughness like Nycholat won't hurt so bad after having a guy like O'Brien already on the team.

Kraijeck is a good skating, puck moving d-man, but he doesn't play very physical and he had a tough year last season - both health-wise and regarding his play on the ice - he seemed to take a big step back. So I'm not too sorry to see him go.

After some tougher guys have been lost recently - McIver to the Ducks, Cowan and Brown waived - bringing O'Brien in is a good move. Eric like!

Ok, a couple questions for you, CF.

First, do you have a source on Brown being waived? I've heard this multiple times but never seen a definitive source on it.

And secondly, what does this mean for Davison? With O'Brien essentially filling the same role, only doing it better, do you think they might now waive Davison and keep Nycholat? Before this trade, I would have said Davison had a spot on the team, but now I'm not so sure.
