Canes Trade Commodore and Stillman to Sens for Corvo and Eaves

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has acquired two Stanley Cup champions, centre Cory Stillman and defenceman Mike Commodore, from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenceman Joe Corvo and right-winger Patrick Eaves.

Stillman, 34, was fourth in team scoring with 21 goals and 25 assists in 55 games with the Hurricanes this season. A native of Peterborough, Ont., Stillman has played 815 career NHL games over parts of 13 seasons between Carolina, Tampa Bay, St. Louis and Calgary. The two-time Stanley Cup winner has recorded 231 career goals, 352 assists, 583 points and 396 penalty minutes.

He ranked second among all Carolina scorers with 26 points ( nine goals and 17 assists) while appearing in all 25 post-season games for the Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes in 2005-06. Stillman became only the sixth player in NHL history to win hockey’s biggest prize in consecutive seasons after winning the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003-04. He was Calgary’s first-round choice (6th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.

Commodore, 28, had three goals and nine assists for 12 points, averaging 19:15 of ice time in 41 games with the Hurricanes this season. The native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.,also won a Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2005-06. In 270 career NHL games, Commodore has scored 14 goals, 47 assists and recorded 413 penalty minutes. He was New Jersey’s second second-round choice (42nd overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

In two seasons with the Senators, Corvo scored 14 goals and added 50 assists for 64 points in 127 games. Eaves scored 33 goals and added 33 assists for 71 points in 157 games over three seasons with the Senators.

“We’re pleased to acquire a very good, young player in Patrick, and address a need for a mobile defenseman who can move the puck on the power play like Joe,” said Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Hurricanes. “We are very thankful to Cory and Mike as two great contributors to the Hurricanes, including during our Stanley Cup run of 2006.”

Corvo, 30, has played in 51 of the Senators’ 56 games this season and ranks first among team defensemen with 15 power-play points (1g, 14a). Among Ottawa defensemen, Corvo ranks second in points (27) and assists (21), tied for second with six goals, and fourth with a plus-7 plus/minus rating, while averaging 17:41 of ice time per game. Corvo’s 27 points this season rank him tied for 23rd among all NHL defensemen in scoring. The Oak Park, Ill., native is in his ninth professional season following a three-year collegiate career at Western Michigan, and in 330 NHL regular-season games with the Los Angeles Kings and the Senators, he has notched 41 goals, earned 100 assists (141 points) and accumulated 148 penalty minutes. The Kings selected Corvo (6’0”, 204 lbs.) in the fourth round, 83rd overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, and he signed as a free agent with Ottawa on July 1, 2006. Corvo ranked fifth among all NHL defenseman with nine points (2g, 7a) in the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs, helping the Senators to the Eastern Conference championship.

Eaves, 23, has played in 26 games with the Senators this season, recording four goals and six assists (10 points). The Fairbault, MN, native suffered a separated shoulder on Nov. 21 at Buffalo and missed 24 games before returning to Ottawa’s lineup on Jan. 15. He has missed Ottawa’s last six games with a shoulder/neck injury suffered at Tampa Bay on Jan. 24. Eaves (5’11”, 190 lbs.) is in his third professional season after the Senators selected him in the first round, 29th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He played three years of collegiate hockey at Boston College prior to turning professional, and in 157 NHL regular-season games, he has notched 38 goals and earned 33 assists (71 points).

****in' A. As a Sens fan I love this deal.

I like Joe and Eaves as people and players but this deal definitely improves the Sens' roster where we need it. Wishing them luck in Carolina!

Holy sh*t son. The Sens made a sweet deal here. They added toughness AND skill? Say goodbye to the rest of the East. Lol Ottawa is gonna challenge Detroit now to be Prez.

Ottawa did very well here. Both guys will bring great playoff experience having won a cup together. You gotta think they're wanting to split up the super line so their no longer a one line time. Scary looking trade for the rest of the East.

Nice pickup for the Sens. Corvo and Eaves will help out in Carolina...but Stillman and Commodore are great pickups.

I like the Sens and their players... but I wouldn't go that far just yet.

I will say that they have the makeup to succeed in the playoffs again.

Love this trade. Gratt's is never on his way out, Murray wants to make the team tougher, nothing less.

Good trade for Ottawa. They needed some kind of shake-up and a trade that improves them greatly on both sides of the puck is definitely one way to do it.
