Canadiens Sign Tom Kostopoulos

MONTREAL – Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the signing of free agent forward Tom Kostopoulos to a two-year contract (2007-08 and 2008-09).

Kostopoulos, 28, spent the last two seasons in Los Angeles after signing as a free agent with the Kings in 2005. In 2006-07 he played in 76 games, notching seven goals and 15 assists for a total of 22 points, and was assessed 73 penalty minutes. Over the course of his NHL career with Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, he played 231 games recording 25 goals, 45 assists (70 points) along with 249 penalty minutes.

A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Kostopoulos played his junior hockey with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) earning 87 points, including 27 goals in his last season in 1998-99 before being drafted in the seventh round (204th overall) by the Penguins in 1999. The 6-foot, 205 lb right winger spent five seasons with Pittsburgh’s organization earning 26 points (10-16-26) in 79 games in Pittsburgh. He added a total of 246 points (97 goals, 149 assists) in 318 games with the Penguins’ AHL farm team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

I like him a lot, he knows he is not a good fighter but anyway he always stood for his teammates and fights..
He is very willing to fight and in guys like Hollweg he will maybe even win a fight.
Habs could need more guys like him..

Hard-nosed player, even if he isn't very successful with the gloves off.

Deffinately a good character player who plays beyond his talent level. Perfect fit for the Canadians who have too many players who don't show up everynight.

I think the Canadian fans will appreciate him. I think he will get the most out of the speed game collecting 10 to 15 goals by being near the set.

He may not be the best fighter, but at least he's a willing middle weight. He can be in some entertaining fights. Right now, the Canadiens could use every fighter that they can get because they don't have much toughness at all. I think Montreal fans will like this guy for that very reason...

Eh

**** you Bob Gainey. **** you.

Why can't we make any real moves for a change? Picking up a third line grit guy is great... But when that's all you do, it is ****ing pathetic. I hate Gainey with a passion. Do me a favour, Bob... Stop killing a historic franchise, you dumb ****.

i'm with you on that. The guy has speed, so what, we have tons of speedy guys down in the A that can do just about the same as this dude, three signings that aren't even worth the paper they are printed on... Another non playoff year for les Habitants....

More than a roster filler

His TKO over Ott last year was one of the more memorable moments of the Kings season. He will be popular in Montreal, just as he was in L.A.
