Canadiens Sign Patrice Brisebois to a One-Year Contract

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of defenceman Patrice Brisebois to a one-year contract (2008-09).

Brisebois, 37, rejoined the Canadiens as a free agent on August 3, 2007. During the 2007-08 season, he registered 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) and 26 penalty minutes in 43 games with the Canadiens, averaging 16:49 minutes of ice time per game. He also participated in 10 playoff games, recording six points (1 goal, 5 assists).

Brisebois (6’01’’, 196 lbs) spent the first 14 seasons of his career in the Canadiens uniform. He played two seasons with the Colorado Avalanche in 2005-06 and 2006-07. The Montreal native took part in 947 career regular season games in the NHL, totaling 402 points (93 goals, 309 assists).

As a member of the 1993 Stanley Cup Champions Canadiens, Brisebois played 88 career playoff games with the Canadiens.

Brisebois was selected in the second round by the Canadiens (30th overall) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.

I dont, unless massive injuries pile up, I see no reason to be playing him. He, along with Dandenault, no longer have any reason to be here....there's just nothing for them, or there at least shouldn't be.

If he stays healthy, 53 games should be reachable for him.

I think this is a little bit of a PR move - the Habs are entering their 100th season, the year will be full of ceremonies and celebrations, and Brisebois is the only player left from the '93 Montreal team that last won the Cup for the Canadiens. Only makes sense to bring him back for one more year. It will be interesting to see how many games he gets in as the season goes on - but there's still room on that Habs blue line, especially if O'Byrne isn't ready for fulltime duty.

not so sure i like this move, instead of giving some of the kids or someone like Alex Henry a shot, they will be playing Brisebois when something happens.

I used to feel sorry him. They fans booed him out of montreal and I thought he would never return. I guess history means something in Montreal because in Nyc it doesn't mean much. The rangers are finally retiring some numbers and there are guys who should have been honored years ago.
