Canadiens Recall Brendon Nash

MONTREAL --The Montreal Canadiens announced Tuesday that defenseman Brendon Nash has been called up from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs. Nash will join the Canadiens in Montreal, for tonight’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, at the Bell Centre.

The 23 year old, 6’03’’, 210 lbs defenseman has recorded 23 points (3 goals, 20 assists) in 50 games with the Bulldogs this season. His three goals have all been scored on the power play. He registered 53 shots on goal and served 41 penalty minutes. Nash is tied for second on the Bulldogs with a +12 differential.

In his last season at Cornell University in 2009-10, Nash led all team defensemen in scoring with 19 points in 33 games (2 goals, 17 assists) and served 48 penalty minutes. He recorded a total of 67 points (8 goals, 59 assists) and 173 penalty minutes in four full seasons with Cornell. From 2004 to 2006, Nash registered 60 points (9 goals, 51 assists) in 112 regular season games with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League).

A native of Kamloops, BC, Nash signed with the Canadiens as a free agent on March 30, 2010. He participated in the Canadiens’ development camp, as well as the rookie camp and the team official training camp in 2010, from which he was released on September 27, after posting a 1-1-2 record in two games.

From what I understand he is more of an offensive presence and strong in front of the night. Not really a fighter type.

He will drop the gloves, but not often. He is not a punishing hitter, but he does use his size effectively.

so he comes up to potentially take Spacek's spot in the lineup... man the blueline has been completely decimated with injuries so far. Markov and Gorges (out for the year), Spacek (game time), Gill (lower body) all out for tonight's contest...

Losing Spacek is addition by subtraction. He's horrible out there, give away after give away and he's taken more shots to the face this year than some porn stars do in a lifetime. All that for 3.8 million per annum. Wish the Habs had called up Henry but it seems like they have half the AHL club up there with them from the start of the year when you factor in guys like Pacioretty, Desharnais, White, and now Nash.

he's not necessarily worth the contract he's being paid, but he's basically the only veteran left on the blueline aside from Hamrlik. Both Hamrlik and Spacek are around 37 years old, and to think that they are basically in the top 4 this year due to the injury bug is kind of crazy. Spacek is far from the best d-man on the team, but he's also been far from the worst.

I agree about Henry. I dont know why Martin will not give him a chance. He is a decent DMan and would add instant toughness to the lineup.

If we would have Henry, White, Moen and then call up Bonneau when we play the Bruins, that would make for a very interesting game.

Poulliot would still knock out Kreicji in the rematch.

FYI, Bonneau is on an AHL only contract.

Henry i don't know why he never gets the call.

Exactly.

Hamrlik & Spacek need to retire/quit/leave/disappear... now. Both useless defenceman.

Why not just bring back Brisebois?

If you can get past the fact that they aren't fighters, these guys are actually pretty solid d-men. That being said I wouldn't be too upset to see pacek gone from the team. I would like to see Gill and Hamrlik resigned next year but unfortunately Spacek is the only one of the three with a contract next year which means one or both of them won't be back.

I just happened to be looking at some hockey news and I read that Roman Hamrlik really wants to retire a Canadien. One last contract and that $$$ is not an issue it's just whether the Habs would like to have him back or not. From an outsider perspective I always thought that Hamrlik was actually a pretty good d-man IMO.

Hamlirk good? Maybe 5 - 10 years ago. He's at best a 5th or 6th defenceman at best. MTL would certainly be better off giving a youngster a chance rather than an old spare part. Same goes for Spacek.

This has nothing to do with fighting or fighters, just the fact both are occupying a spot a young guy could be taking, and getting the same results if not better.

the only acceptable way for Spacek to leave Montreal is through trade. If he retires, the last year of his contract is still counting against the cap. Hamrlik knows he will not be getting anywhere near his current salary of 5.5 mill, and depending how people feel, Markov might be stuck getting only 1 yr deals until he shows a consistent streak of injury free seasons.

Wisniewski on the other hand is a UFA at season's end and making 3.25, which could be bumped to the range of what Hamrlik is currently making (who knows if that's with Montreal or not). Aside from that, the only defenseman under contract beyond this year are...

P.K. Subban, Brandon Nash and Alex Henry...
