Canadiens Re-Sign P.K. Subban to Two-Year Contract

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Monday the signing of defenseman P.K. Subban to a two-year contract (2012-13 to 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Subban, 23, notched 36 points (7 goals, 29 assists) in 81 regular season games in 2011-12. He tied for second on the team with five powerplay goals. The second-year defenseman also served 119 penalty minutes and registered 205 shots on goal, ranking him seventh among NHL defensemen, and led the Canadiens with an average of 24:18 of ice time per game. Subban led the Canadiens for most powerplay ice time with 283 minutes and 4 seconds.

Since making his NHL debut with the Canadiens back in 2009-10, Subban has registered 76 points (21 goals, 55 assists) in 160 regular season games. The 6’0’’, 206 lbs defenseman has scored 14 of his goals on the powerplay, and has three game-winning goals. Subban has served 245 penalty minutes and owns a plus-2 plus/minus differential. He has tallied three goals and 12 points in 21 NHL playoff games, including two with the man advantage. Subban was voted to the NHL All-Rookie Team following the 2010-11 season.

A native of Toronto, Subban was the Canadiens’ third selection (second round, 43rd overall) at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to making his debut at the professional level, Subban played with the OHL’s Belleville Bulls and earned a gold medal with Canada at the 2008 and the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Good deal on the Habs end. I was hoping Detroit would have made an offer to trade for him with our depleted blueline and need for a potential top pairing d man.

Good to see another Bruins villain stay with Montreal.

Marc Bergevin was very patient and showed a lot of balls during this process , not to often a gm gets the upper hand with super agent don Meehan.

Shake your head , subban will log some serious ice time taking pressure off Andre Markov who will be a big target vs bigger teams , great move on both sides.

Wait...he had 7 goals and 36 points in 81 games. And that goof thought he was worth Drew Doughty money? Kudos to Bergie for telling him that until he actually starts playing like Drew Doughty, he ain't shyt, so for his sake, take what they're offering and EARN that kind of salary.

The term "cancer" when not applied to the actual disease is so ****in stupid.

Secondly relax, he isn't that bad and we've won 3 games. We are better with him than without him.

Same amount of points doughty had last year actually , Doughtys contract is 56 million over 8 years , subbans camp was looking for 5 million a year and he's worth that ,Bergevin and subban did great by agreeing on this deal , Subban will get big money soon enough and as far as talent gos Subban is every but as good as Doughty.

If those are truly the figures than Bergivan(sp) did well in signing a quality d-man at a price far below what P.K./Meehan were asking. On the Fan590(Toronto) today they were saying that P.K.'s camp were looking for 5+per year. The rookie GM earned his pay. As for being a dick......well....P.K. has some work to do.

DaleHunter32 01-29-2013 07:37 AM

ha.... that's a long ways away from that 6 year 36m he was asking for
i guess someone tipped him off that he needs the habs more than the habs need him
