Canadiens Fire Guy Carbonneau

Montréal - Montreal Canadiens' General Manager, Bob Gainey, today announced that he is taking over Guy Carbonneau as Head Coach of the Montreal Canadiens effective immediately. Associate coach Doug Jarvis, assistant coaches Kirk Muller and Roland Melanson will be staying on the coaching staff.

Bob Gainey became the 15th General Manager in the history of the Montreal Canadiens on June 2, 2003. Gainey, 55, spent his entire NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens from 1973 to 1989, playing 1,160 games winning five Stanley Cup championships (1975 to 1979 and 1985-86).

Gainey's career as an NHL head coach started in Minnesota when he assumed the coaching duties of the North Stars back in 1990. One year later, he led that team to the Stanley Cup finals. He was the Stars' Head Coach and General Manager from 1992 to 1996 and looked over the franchise's transfer from Minnesota to Dallas.

With Minnesota and later with Dallas, Gainey coached a total of 415 regular season games. With the Canadiens, after taking over the team on an interim basis on January 14, 2006 for the remainder of the 2005-06 season, he maintained a record of 23 wins, 15 losses and 3 OTL in 41 games. In the 2006 playoffs, the Canadiens fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in six games in the Eastern Conference Quarter Finals.

Bob Gainey will conduct his first team practice tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the Bell Sports Complex, in Brossard and coach his first game that same night when the Edmonton Oilers will be at the Bell Centre to face the Canadiens.

This is kind of a shocker. I mean, he was known to not be very communicative with some of his players and the team has struggled...meanwhile Carbo makes some very odd and inexperienced coaching decisions which could be looked at as mistakes. But off a win, and after getting off to such a good start this season, and the success of last season, I figured he'd at least get the benefit of seeing this season through to the end.

Now Guy can reprise his role in the next Pink Panther installment
as Clouseau's bumbling French sidekick. Gainey is much better for
this team full of panty waists who need a kick in the arse!

I am kinda surprised it happened at this time of the year,at least from the Habs. This kind of timing is usually a Lou Lamirello trick. I don't know just how much Carbo is to blame. Yes, the Habs are fast headed into the tank but is it the coachs responsibility to grow his players gonads for them? I don't know if you can teach heart or passion. I always figured you got it or you don't and right now they don't.

When you're second in the conference for points you go no matter what.

Also, he led this team to first in the conference last season when everyone expected 14th.

I think you mean "if you're in the Canadiens organization, you went no matter what".

According to Darren Dreger on TSN,

this move came from Ownership who pressured Gainey to do something to fix this team or he would be axed, and as you know it's usually the coach that takes the fall when the team falters but sometimes it's not the coach's fault,

(IE: paul maurice with the leafs and today Carbonneau with Montreal)

Uh, wow!!! Too many lazy asses on that team. If half of them took the game and the team as seriously as Carbo they wouldn't be in such a tailspin!! I mean, Carbo ain't perfect, far away from it but..... Kovalev must be bustin' a gut over this....
