Canadiens Claim Patrick Traverse

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the acquisition of defenseman Patrick Traverse, claimed on waivers from the San Jose Sharks.

Traverse, 32, is coming back to the Canadiens' organization, for which he played from 2001 through 2003. In 109 games with the Canadiens, the 6'4'', 200-pound defenseman collected 23 points (4-19-23) and 48 penalty minutes. The Canadiens acquired him from the Boston Bruins on February 21, 2001, in return for defenseman Eric Weinrich.

Traverse, a native of Montreal, started his NHL career during the 1995-96 season with the Ottawa Senators, for which he also played from 1998 through 2000. Traverse started the 2000-01 season with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim before being traded to the Boston Bruins, with Samuel Pahlsson, in return for Andrei Nazarov, on November 18, 2000.

Signed as a free agent by Dallas on September 9, 2004, Traverse played one game with the Stars in 2005-06 and collected no point. He also took part in 40 games with the Iowa Stars, in the AHL, where he registered 24 points, including three goals. Through his NHL career, Traverse has totaled 65 points, including 14 goals, and 113 penalty minutes in 279 games.

That's the veteran 7th d that I said the Habs might claim off waivers. Better to have him sitting as a reserve in the press box for the first month or two than have a young guy there. He'll likely be placed on waivers again once Bouillon and Souray and Cote are back.

P.S. Good to see that Ferland cleared waivers, the habs can't afford to lose him...

i don't really think much of this. Patrick Traverse isn't that good an addition and might not see much playing time if at all with the big club.

I think there would be a better d-man available on waivers than Traverse. Why not give a guy like Hulse a chance?

Amen! Let Montreal send him down to the AHL instead of the Sharks.

Apparently Jason Doig was available. I'd rather have him then Patrick Reverse

Apparently Jason Doig was available. I'd rather have him then Patrick Reverse. Habs fans were so happy to get rid of him last time he was in town.

honestly any combination of Jason Doig, Cale Hulse or Patrick Traverse wouldn't make a third of a good NHL defenseman... no matter what you people think, there is a reason why these players were released or placed on waivers... i just wonder why in the world Bob Gainey would bring back that half ass hitch of a defenseman.... UGH!

Traverse sticks around yet a guy like Todd Simpson a former captain at that, can only get a job overseas. Just shows how pathetic the league is today....
