Canadiens Claim Glen Metropolit Off Waivers

MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced Friday that forward Glen Metropolit was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.

“I indicated Thursdat that one of the needs we had identified for our team was to acquire a centreman to add depth in the middle and complete our group of centremen consisting of Saku Koivu, Tomas Plekanec, Maxim Lapierre and Kyle Chipchura. The opportunity presented itself over the last few hours when the Flyers placed Glen Metropolit on waivers. Glen is a seasoned veteran who played very well against us in last year’s playoffs against the Bruins. We are very pleased to have him on our roster,” indicated General Manager Bob Gainey.

Metropolit, 34, amassed 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists) and served 15 penalty minutes in 55 games with the Philadelphia Flyers this season. Since 1999-2000, Metropolit registered 127 points (39 goals, 88 assists) with a plus-13 rating and 111 penalty minutes in 317 career regular-season games in the NHL, with Washington, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, St. Louis, Boston and Philadelphia. In 2005-06, the centreman was the National Swiss League’s top scorer with 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists) in 44 games with the HC Lugano.

Good move on Montreal's part, getting a veteran center to play on the third or fourth line, Once Tanguay an Latendresse come back the Canadiens will have a real surplus of forwards....

Kovalev--Plekanec--Kostitsyn
Higgins---Koivu-----Tanguay
Pacioretty--Metropolit--D'Agoustini
Kostopoulos-Lapierre--Latendresse
Spare parts
Laraque(13th forward)-Stewart(will be going back to minors soon)-Chipchura(will be going back to minors soon)--Kostitsyn(Minors)

Markov--Schnieder
Komersarec--Hamrlik
Georges----Bouillon
Spare Parts
Brisebois(seventh D man)--Janik(Minors)--O'Byrne(minors)--Dandenault(will be moved in the next few days)

Montreal opened up about 1.3 million with the moving of Begin an will open up another 1.7 million once Gainey finds Mathieu Dandenault a new home......So the habs are still under the cap.. Janik's salary gets pro-rated because he will be sent to the minors right away, taking about a 100k hit on montreals cap....

Wonder if he will dress for the Canadiens tonight since he doesn't have to travel to join the team as they play in Philly tonight? Wasn't much of a Metro fan anyway.

For some reason I don't think Carbonneau is going to change much from the last two games, the only change is that Stewart is out an Laraque will be in tonight, I expect to see Metropolit tomorrow against San Jose....

Good solid pick-up for the Habs. He was a real pain in the ass last year against Boston. A definite upgrade over Chipchura toughness-wise.
