Bruins Trade Hunwick to Colorado

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that Boston has acquired defenseman Colby Cohen from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Matt Hunwick. Cohen will report to Boston’s minor league affiliate in Providence (American Hockey League).

The 21-year-old Cohen made his NHL debut earlier this season for the Avalanche on November 6 and has skated in three games for the Avs this year. He also registered one goal and 12 penalty minutes in 14 games for Colorado’s minor league affiliate in Lake Erie this season. 2010-11 marks Cohen’s first full professional season after playing three games for Lake Erie at the end of last year.

Cohen skated at Boston University for three seasons from 2007-10 and helped lead the Terriers to the NCAA National Championship in 2009. For his career at BU, the 6’2’’, 200-pound blueliner recorded 25-53=78 totals in 118 games.

A native of Villanova, Pennsylvania, Cohen was originally drafted by the Avalanche in the second round (45th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Hunwick has appeared in 164 career NHL games (all with the Bruins) and tallied 13-32=45 totals. This season, Hunwick skated in 22 games and registered one goal, two assists and nine penalty minutes. The Warren, Michigan native played 163 games over four seasons at the University of Michigan from 2003-07 with 24-73=97 totals. Hunwick was drafted by the Bruins in the seventh round (224th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Makes sense. Boston needs cap space with Savard coming back. Plus with Rumours of Cumiskey being moved to Edmonton they would need a replacement on D

I'm ok with this trade. The B's clear some cap space and pick up a young player who appears to have a bit of potential.

Fine with this, the cap space was needed. At least now Mcquaid will be in the lineup everyday which means more fights.

A deal that seems to serve in both team's interests - the Bruins shed some cap space and the Avs get a healthy body and some experience for their blue line.

A couple years ago I thought Hunwick was a can't miss prospect, but I was looking over his stats tonight and saw he was a team worst -16 last season? And he wasn't off to a great start this season, looks like he's been regressing since that rookie season. Maybe he'll turn it around in Colorado...

Fine and dandy both ways. Cohen is more feisty than youd think B's fans...

Hunwick is a very Decent player and the Avs will be happy with him. I am sure he will also get more playing time and his #'s will pick up some. I am OK with this though, The question now is who is next.

In Dater's article in the Denver Post he mentions Hunwicks fight with Kane and calls Kane on of the leagues best fighters hahahaha

Although he holds one of our favorite KOs in recent times

The Avs trade away a decent prospect for another 5-6-7 d-man when they already have a surplus of 5-6-7 d-men (and a shortage of top 4 d-men). What am I missing?

exactly...cohen is gonna be a good top 4 dman in the next two seasons while hunwick reached his peak at michigan and hasn't done much since to improve. boston got alot for a middle of the road guy.

Yikes..maybe for a star player it isn't such a stretch to say that..Kane is Atlanta's future star no doubt and he did give Hunwick stitches..but yeah that's overrating Kane considerably. Kane isn't a Subban thankfully, but for star players who don't have to fight often he is rising in the ranks easily though he'll only have a few fights a year. He can actually throw them. I wanna see him beat up Crosby one day. I remember when Deryk Engelland was a no name and he grabbed Kane. Not much of a fight as Kane fell, but fights are gonna find Kane because he goes when challenged.
