Bruins Sign Shawn Thornton

BOSTON - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed free-agent right wing Shawn Thornton to a multi-year contract.

Thornton, a member of the 2007 Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks, is a native of Oshawa, Ontario. The 6'1", 209-pound right wing appeared in 48 games for the Ducks last season, in which he registered two goals, seven assists and 88 PIMs. He also appeared in 15 playoff games for Anaheim, recording 19 PIMs.

Thornton joined the Anaheim organization after spending the previous three seasons with the Chicago organization, where he spent time with both the Blackhawks as well as Chicago's AHL affiliate in Norfolk.

The 29 year-old has played in 79 career NHL games, and has scored four goals, eight assists and been assessed 158 PIMs.

About time the Bruins addressed this glaring need. He's good enough to warrant regular playing time as well. Also good to see it's a multi-year deal. I can't say I'm overly confident that he'll be able to do well against the likes of Brash, Laraque, Peters, McGrattan, etc., but at least the Bruins have a legit enforcer now.

Did Reich sign elsewhere? Or is this the beginning of the end of his Bruins days(in Boston, anyway)?

100% of the time. It's a one-way contract. He earned it. We will see him in the NHL for the next 2-3 years.

Steg is probably dancing naked in the streets right now.

But watch when the Bruins send him down to the AHL......
