Bruins Sign Milan Lucic to Three-Year Contract Extension

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today, September 15, that the club has signed forward Milan Lucic to a three-year contract extension through the 2015-16 season. Lucic’s contract is worth an average of $6 million annually over the three years of his deal.

Lucic, a 6’4”, 220-pound native of Vancouver, B.C., has skated in 359 games with the Bruins over the course of five seasons from 2007-12, recording 90-122=212 totals with 525 penalty minutes and a plus-43 rating.

During the 2011-12 season, the forward skated in 81 games, registering an NHL career-high in assists with 35, and notching 26 goals for 61 total points, just one shy of his highest NHL career points total. He hit the 20-goal mark for the second straight season and was the first of six NHL players to reach both 20 goals and 100 penalty minutes on the season.

In 2010-11, Lucic earned the Bruins’ team scoring title with a 30-goal campaign, recording 30-32=62 totals with a plus-28 rating. His 121 penalty minutes made him one of just two players in the league to hit both the 30-goal and 100-penalty minute plateaus that season. The forward also skated in 25 postseason games, registering 5-7=12 totals and 63 penalty minutes, en route to the 2011 Stanley Cup championship.

Lucic has helped the Bruins advance to the playoffs in all five of his seasons with the club and has skated in 62 career playoff games, notching 15-20=35 totals with 137 penalty minutes.

Following his first NHL season in 2007-08, Lucic became just the tenth rookie in team history to win the Seventh Player Award, an annual award presented to the Bruin who went above and beyond the call of duty and exceeded the expectations of Bruins fans during the regular season, as voted by the fans. He also received the club’s Eddie Shore Award in 2009 for exceptional hustle and determination.

Prior to Boston, the 24-year-old spent three seasons with his hometown Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League from 2004-07, recording 39-48=87 totals with 298 penalty minutes in 133 games, and capturing a Memorial Cup championship in 2007. Lucic was drafted by the Bruins in the second round (50th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

3 years at 6 per year confirmed wow!

Broons66 09-15-2012 09:28 AM

Yes!!! I like what Chiarelli's done by tying up the teams nucleus for years to come. Looch was the final one that needed an extension. Looch gets to pulverize the Northeast Division for 4 more years in black & gold! Sweet!!!

He got more than Seguin? Didn't this make him the highest paid forward on the team now?

That seems allot for a spot picking cheap shot artist.

Broons66 09-15-2012 09:46 AM

I wonder if Boll considers Looch a "spot picker",eh Cookie Monster? Looch,Seguin and Marchand all signed in a week;B's are in good shape for a few years i think.

He does. Thats why Boll beat his goofy ass, the last time the played.

I'm sure the Tim Wallaces, Josef Melichars, Eric Brewers and Jarko Ruutus of the world agree.

didnt lucic fight carkner?

ScottRasner 09-15-2012 10:16 AM

6 mil a year? About 2.5M too much.

James Neal is wondering how Lucic deserves that much money. Terrible.

So 1 out of every 10 guys on his fight card is legit.....watch out Bob Probert.

He's an overrated goof. If hes such a tough guy, why is he so cheap and dirty?

Is he always under "coaches orders" ?

"legit" is kinda an understatement. carkner is probly the toughest dude in the league. besides, he's not being paid that much to fight

I like Lucic and would like to have him on my team, but 6 mil per season seems like an awful lot for a guy who in 5 seasons in the NHL averages 72gp 18g 24a 42pts per season.

Phila26Flyers 09-15-2012 10:57 AM

First off, I like Lucic, but $6 million is too much. Here are a few other players with a similar cap hit the next couple years.

Patrick Kane - $6.3 million
Jonathan Toews - $6.3
Sedin bros - $6.1 million
John Tavares - $5.5 million
Henrik Zetterberg - $6.1 million
Erik Karlsson - $6.5 million
Ryan Miller - $6.25 million

Sorry, but all of those guys are not barely worth more than Lucic. The Bruins overpaid him, and better hope the cap doesn't plummet when the lockout ends.

i don't think you can put zetterberg on that list as his cap hit is brought down due to length of contract...but anyways very good list of comparisons
