Bruins Sign Jay Pandolfo to One-Year Contract

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today, February 12, that the team has signed forward Jay Pandolfo to a one-year, two-way contract through the 2012-13 season and then placed him on waivers. The contract is worth $600,000 at the NHL level and $350,000 at the AHL level.

Chiarelli will discuss the transaction tonight with media prior to the Bruins' game against the New York Rangers, and Pandolfo will address media during the game's first intermission.

The 6'1", 190-pound native of Burlington, MA is a veteran of 881 career NHL games and has registered 100 goals, 126 assists and 162 penalty minutes over 14 NHL seasons with the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. He has appeared in 131 career playoff games (all with the Devils) and has tallied 11 goals, 22 assists and 33 points. Pandolfo is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, having won with the Devils in both 2000 and 2003.

He set a career high in goals with 14 during the 1998-99 season and contributed a career best 14 assists during the 2006-07 season. He was also named a Frank J. Selke Trophy finalist during the 2006-07 season.

The 38-year-old played four years of college hockey at Boston University from 1992-1996, where he posted 38 goals and 29 assists in 40 games during his senior season in 1996.

He was drafted by the Devils in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Pandolfo had been with the Bruins on a Professional Tryout Agreement since the start of training camp on January 13, 2013.

I wonder what the Bruins see in this guy? Thought he was pretty washed up.

Also 162 penalty minutes in 881 games is extremely low. I bet there's not too many guys who played that many games with that few PIMs. Sign of an extrememly disciplined player I guess.

Still trying to find that vet leadership they used to have with Recchi I assume. Not gonna find it with this guy though.

This move makes no sense. The only thing Pandolfo brings to the table is strong penalty killing, which the Bruins have plenty of. What the Bruins desperately need is a pure goal scorer who can help their dreadful power play.

My only assumption is that they want Pandolfo as depth insurance just in case they lose an important penalty killer to injury come playoff time, since Pandolfo has a ton of playoff experience. Aside from that, this seems like a pointless signing.

Agreed, but IMO they missed out on Knuble for that, Pandolfo is not going to help them much, just like Rolston last year (?).

Yeah Knuble would have been a better candidate. Isn't Arnott still available?

But yeah Rolston was a joke last year, along with Zanon, Mottau etc...

There goes any ice time Lane MacDermid could have potentially had.

They don't need that veteran leadership anymore. When Recchi came on board, the team was mostly a collection of young players who had never won the Cup before or even gone deep into the postseason for that matter.

Now, most of the team has the experience and leadership that is only achieved through previous success. Chara, Bergeron, Krejci, Seidenberg, etc, etc.... a couple years ago these players had the skill, but not the seasoning. Nowadays, they have both.

Basically, we don't need a Jay Pandolfo or any other old fart that's one fall down the stairs away from needing a hip replacement.

I'd much rather watch Lane MacDermid beat someone down than watch Pandolfo struggle to get 5 points this season. It has to be some sort of veteran depth move. The Bruins have plenty of solid leadership this year.
