Bruins Sign Brad Marchand to Four-Year Contract Extension

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today, September 7, that the club has signed forward Brad Marchand to a four-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season. Marchand’s contract will be worth an average of $4.5 million annually over the four years of his deal. Chiarelli will speak to the media later today regarding the signing.

The 2011-12 season marked Marchand’s second full NHL season with the Bruins. The 5’9”, 183-pound native of Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia registered NHL career highs in goals, assists and points, recording 28-27=55 totals, along with 87 penalty minutes in 76 games. His 28 goals ranked second on the Bruins, behind Tyler Seguin’s 29 tallies, and his plus-31 rating ranked fifth in the league.

In Marchand’s first full season with Boston in 2010-11, he played in 77 games, notching 21-20=41 totals and 51 penalty minutes. He finished the season tied for third in the league with five shorthanded goals and recorded the second highest plus/minus rating among NHL rookies with plus-25. At the end of the regular season, Marchand received Boston’s “7th Player Award,” an annual award presented to the Bruin who went above and beyond the call of duty and exceed the expectations of Bruins fans during the regular season, as voted by the fans.

The forward went on to rank second overall in postseason scoring – and first among rookies – with 11 goals in 25 games and added eight assists en route to the 2011 Stanley Cup championship. He also recorded a rookie-best plus-12 rating and scored two goals in the Cup-clinching victory over the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7.

For his career, Marchand has played in 173 games with Boston, registering 49-48=97 totals and 158 penalty minutes with a plus-53 rating, as well as 12 goals and 9 assists in 32 playoff games. From 2008-10, he skated in 113 games with the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins, recording 31-60=91 totals, 118 penalty minutes and a plus-27 rating. Marchand was drafted by Boston in the third round (71st overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Don't much care for the player or his antics but he can get away with it being a Bruin. That said he is a good player and this seems like a good deal for the Bruins.

Did his nose get a separate deal?

Don't like Marchand one bit, but I won't deny he is a good player. Good signing by the Bruins.

Great signing for Boston, Pretty darn good player, and a even better Agitator.

I know some people who grew up with or around Marchand. Apparently he was a arrogant prick when he was in high school and in juniors.

He's a rodent, but he's a talented rodent.

As a fellow Maritimer, I want to wish him the best, but I'll cheer for McQuaid instead who is from PEI!

I'll say he's a good player and anyone who makes me hate them as much he does, is doing something right. Just wish the Habs still had Lapierre. Than we could have the two biggest cheese eaters in the league, going at it...

We have P.K. who comes 3rd and I thought that their go was pretty hilarious.

P.K. Subban vs Brad Marchand Oct 27, 2011 -...

Good signing for the B's but for more money than I would have thought. But what do I know?

A classless punk who can only fit in in Boston. Great deal for both parties.
