thats stupid, he wears it because hes having an injury and a simple visor in plastic is not strong enough to protect the steel plates he has in his face...

i know hes got the steel plates in his face, todd fedoruk has em in his face too, i dont think he ever wore a full steel cage in his recovery tho. not sure if i know of anyone ever in the nhl who has worn a full cage... maybe someone can educate me on this ???

The NHL does not permit players to wear full facial protection unless in the case of an injury. The league has to receive a medical waiver and approve the design of the shield/cage. Also, the league doesn't permit any kind of metal facial protection of any kind, thus why Emelin's cage is black plastic.

the black threw me off, i was thinking it was metal. good to know. i wont hate on him as much, but doesnt it seem that guys with the fishbowl seem to grow three inches , untill it comes off then they seem to settle down a bit.

Well I'm sure that Emelin is having more fun than usual with the extra protection, but I remember him being a pretty heavy hitter during his rookie year last year as well. Just seems to be his game.
