Bruins' Shawn Thornton Out 7-10 Days with Concussion

BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli issued the following update today, February 1, on forward Shawn Thornton: Thornton will miss the next 7-10 days due to a concussion sustained during the first period of the Bruins/Sabres game on Thursday, January 31.

Thornton has skated in seven games this season and has registered one goal and 25 penalty minutes. For his career, the 35-year-old has appeared in 457 games with 31 goals, 43 assists and 797 penalty minutes. The two-time Stanley Cup champion joined the Bruins as a free agent on July 1, 2007 and recently signed to a two-year contract extension through the 2013-14 season on March 17, 2012.

I wish him a speedy recovery. Thorts is a class act. As a long suffering Sabres fan, I'm happy that it (the Scott win not the concussion) happened, I just don't want to see a warrior like him with long term consequences.

Let's hope it is indeed a short recovery, and not one of those "lingering" deals that ruin so many careers. Thornton's a good guy and a class act, as is Scott, and while we enjoy the gladiatorial aspect of these encounters, it's always sobering to realize just what these guys risk every time they put on the skates.

Get well soon, Shawn.

Get well soon Thorts. I have lots of respect for him, and even though he is a Bruin, I am a fan of his He did look a bit cross-eyed in the box, and I am glad he didn't play afterwards. These guys have giant balls putting their health on the line like they do. True warriors!

Lol...It's far from over.

I think maybe playing McDermid on a regular basis to ease the load so to speak might be wise, but Thornton is far from done.

Allot of fighters have come back from allot worse. I mean he did get up and skate on his own. He was wobbly, but never lost consciousness like Orr or Carkner.

He'll be fine.

Lurch 1 and 2 do need to pull their heads out of their butts and do more...

MacDermid better play regularly now, and with Tardif being called up, it's probably either MacDermid or Bourque in the lineup.

Sucks for this Saturday against the Leafs. Hope the media doesn't have a huge outcry about fighting in hockey now.

If the team is already stating that he should only miss 1-2 weeks, then I can't imagine his concussion being serious. The Bruins have a very rich recent history with concussions and if it's anything serious they just state "indefinitely" and don't give a timetable like they did here with Thorts.
Let's hope that is the case.

I was wondering what Thorts was yelling to Scott afterwards in the penalty box, since the fight went down fair and square and Thorts doesn't usually have a beef with anyone without a reason. I guess the concussion explains it. He was probably in lala land and was yelling something nonsensical to Scott, which is why Scott never responded to him.

Daniel Paille is also out after taking a stick to the face last night, so expect to see all 3 of those guys in the lineup tomorrow vs the Leafs.

Bourque-Kelly-Peverley
MacDermid-Campbell-Tardif

Yeah I hope Thornton recovers fast. The article VF posted Scott felt guilty about injuring him. I wonder if that will change Scott's willingness to fight. I know he's a "goon" but maybe he'll still be effected like a batter hitting a line drive off the pitcher, it bothers the athlete for awhile.

Hopefully Thornton has a speedy recovery and when he comes back he will be back to business as usual and not gun shy. You never want to see anyone seriously hurt and especially a stand up guy like Thornton. Good to see Scott show some concern for Shawn's healthy in his post fight interview, classy.
I think we can finally turn the page on whether John Scott is legit or not. After starting off his career beating some lesser oponents he's had some impressive wins beating the likes of Rechlicz, Boll, Parros (tko), Koci, Westgarth, Janssen, Engelland and now Tko'ing Thornton. I don't know if i've ever seen Westgarth, Engelland, or Thornton take such beatings at the NHL level before. Scott is legit. There is no shame in losing to this monster.

I'll be surprised if he wants to try Scott again.
