Bruins Re-Sign Byron Bitz

BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed forward Byron Bitz to a multi-year contract.

In his first NHL season in 2008-09, Bitz notched four goals and three assists in 35 regular season games, and recorded his first NHL multi-point game with a two goal performance against Florida on February 24, 2009. He also skated in five postseason games for the Bruins and tallied 1-1=2 totals.

He made his NHL debut with the Bruins on January 10, 2009 against the Carolina Hurricanes, notching an assist for his first career NHL point.

Bitz registered three goals and seven assists in 37 games with the P-Bruins last season. In 61 games with the P- Bruins during the 2007-2008 season, Bitz potted 13 goals and contributed 14 assists. Before joining the P-Bruins in 2007, Bitz played four seasons at Cornell University with 28-60=88 totals and 155 penalty minutes in 124 career games. He graduated from Cornell with a degree in Business in 2007.

The 24-year-old native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was originally drafted by the Bruins in the fourth round (107th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Nice re-signing. He impressed me last year, especially stepping up and taking on Brash in his first fight.

Ballroom Blitz? No Byron Bitz!

Solid signing for future midrange depth.

Good to hear that Bitz got resigned by the Bruins. Starting your regular season NHL fight card with a bout against Donald Brashear is a hell of a first impression. Then again, Zach Bogosian of Atlanta got to do the same thing last season. Anyway, I'm a fan of Bitz and look forward to seeing him play some more for Boston.

That's a real good deal for the Bruins. We needed him to come back cheap.

Mehhh. For some reason I seem to be the only B's fan who's not enamored with this guy. Oh well, I hope he proves me wrong and plays great for us. I just think his toughness is overrated. Yes, he dropped the gloves with Brashear. But he hugged him for dear life. I would've been more impressed if he was swinging for the fences against him. Even if he got dropped. But thats just me.

I must say I dont catch a ton of bruins games but he impressed me in the ones I did see. He could develop into a pretty good power forward imo and score 15-20 goals as well as fight and hit a bit. Time will tell but he is a big body and hoopefully for bruins fans this works out. Price is right.
