Bruins Place Thornton and Fernandez on IR

Boston, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has placed goaltender Manny Fernandez and forward Shawn Thornton on the injured reserve list. Fernandez is out of action with a left knee strain, while Thornton will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a broken bone in his left foot.

Fernandez was acquired by the Bruins from the Minnesota Wild on July 1, 2007 in exchange for Petr Kalus and a fourth round draft pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He has appeared in four games for Boston this season, with a record of 2-2 and goals-against average of 3.93.

Thornton, who was signed by the Bruins as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2007, has played in 13 games for Boston this season, tallying 22 PIMs and a plus/minus rating of -1.

Not good. Thornton was playing really well before the injury and even played on the 3rd line most of the last game he suited up for.

This does mean Reich will get more games now which is good but he is no heavy.
Hopefully Lucic steps up and fights some of the bigger guys but I'd hate to throw that burden on the rook.

That would explain why he wasn't in the last two games for the Bruins.

Good to see they're replacing him with Reich and not some Euro.

Another exciting fighter to hit the IR wagon. How did he break his foot-hit by a puck? Sucks for Bruins fans!

When I at first saw

Bruins place Shawn Thornton

I was shocked that they placed him on waivers.

Bruins fans shouldn't worry,
Lucic will do well against the heavys if he is dressed and Reich can and will fight them too .

The Bruins are really taking an injury beating. Real unfortunate to have Thornton out of the lineup for so long.

Sad to see Thornton gone for awhile.

They still haven't caught up the team with the toughest IR in the league, the Sharks. Davison, Norton, Murray, Clowe, and Plihal all on IR. Just to make sure nobody will fight on the team, Semenov will probably go on IR because he got a paper cut on his finger.

Sucks about Thornton, couldn't care less about Manny at this point. The only positive is that Reich gets to play. But he can go back to the press box when Thornton's healthy again.

thornton on IR

to bad thornton was hirt he will be missed(for his toughness)
he is a steady player that his team relies on......
but .... it gives lucic a chance to show his stuff.....
old time bruins are going to love this kid .........
second comming of an old time player (you judge for yourself)

Shawn Thornton...what is there to say? Other than that blows. Bruins did exactly what the Lightning did last year with Denis...sign a mediocre goaltender and expect him to be a good starter...oh well..Thomas is playing better anyways. Quick question...anyone know what the deal is with Alexei Zhamnov?

This is the last year we're paying him I believe.
