Bruins Acquire Schaefer from Ottawa for Donovan
BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has acquired left-winger Peter Schaefer from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for right-winger Shean Donovan.
"Peter will bring us some added scoring and tenacity along the boards," said Chiarelli. "He has playoff experience and he is a proven penalty killer. His addition will help round out our forwards." Schaefer, a member of the 2007 Eastern Conference Champion Ottawa Senators, is a native of Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan. The 6'1", 185-pound left-winger appeared in 77 games for the Senators, posting 12 goals, 34 assists and 32 penalty minutes. He also registered one goal, five assists and ten penalty minutes in 20 Stanley Cup playoff game appearances for Ottawa. Schaefer spent three seasons with Ottawa, after being traded by Vancouver for Sami Salo on September 21, 2002. Originally drafted by the Canucks as a 3rd round choice (66th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Schaeffer has played in 493 career NHL games, in which he has tallied 89 goals, 144 assists and 180 penalty minutes. The Bruins signed Donovan as a free agent on July 2, 2006 after spending over two seasons with the Calgary Flames. Last season with Boston, he tallied six goals, 11 assists and 56 penalty minutes in 76 games. Last edited by Thrillhouse; 07-17-2007 at 01:31 PM. |

Its true - here's the link:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=213812&hubname= OTTAWA (CP) - The Ottawa Senators have traded winger Peter Schaefer to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran winger Shean Donovan. The move will save the Senators space under the salary cap. Schaefer has three years and US$6.7 million left on his deal while Donovan has one year left at $925,000. The 30-year-old Schaefer had 12 goals and 34 assists in 77 games with the Senators last season. He added a goal and five assists in 20 playoff games. The 32-year-old Donovan had six goals and 11 assists in 76 games with the Bruins last season. Good deal for the Bruins. Schaefer brings a heck of a lot more to the table than Donovan does. Looks like a cap move by the Sens.

I know we need some Cap room, but this is a sh1tty trade.
Schaeffer is a really good acquisition for the Bruins and a very popular player here in Ottawa, it's sad to see him go. MAybe this trade will motivate Donavan, who hasn't really played to his potential. This gives Murray almost 2 million to work with, I guess that will go to Emery. Deal Gerber now. |

I don't think this is so bad for Ottawa. Obviously Schaefer is a much better player than Donovan, but this is all about the $2.1 mil they save for next season. Ottawa has guys like Eaves and Vermette that will easily replace him, while Donovan will serve a role on the 3rd-4th line.
Good trade for both teams. |

I agree with Thrillhouse here. This is a good trade for both teams, and Donovan and Schafer will both provide an important role on their new team.
Schaefer is the more skilled player, and Donovan is more of a grinder, but even in that case I like this trade for the Senators. In Ottawa, they have plenty of skilled top 6 or top 9 forwards that can replace Schaefer (like Vermette, Eaves, McAmmond, Kelly, etc.) but they needed a speedy grinder on the 3rd or 4th line, and Donovan is the perfect fit for that position. He will add a little more grit when McGrattan is out of the lineup (which should be the majority of the time) so next year Donovan could turn out to be a more valuable player than Schaefer was for the Sens. And for the Bruins, Schaefer is a good fit as well. Since they brought in Shawn Thornton and re-signed Reich, there really isn't a spot for Donovan anymore, but they needed one more top 6 forward, and Scheafer will easily be able to help them out with his 15-20 goals and 40-50 points. Good trade for both teams. I don't think the Senators got "ripped" or anything at all. You have to look at each team's NEEDS, and NOT just who has the most points out of the two players being swapped.

I had a feeling that Chiarelli was going to try and pry a forward away from Ottawa. I like this trade for Boston. Shaeffer is a skilled player who can kill penalties, which is something that the Bruins desperately needed.
If the Bruins can find one more top 6 forward who can put the puck in the net, they're in good shape heading into next season. |

Nice trade. I like Schaefer, he is a hard worker that usually gives full effort in every game. He even played hard over here during the lockout season, while a lot of "star players" that season just got over here to play a little bit he showed great effort most of the time.
The only negative aspect is that the Bruins get another player under 6'0 and loose one with size. Bruins will be small up front.

The Bruins got the better of this IMO. But I don't think it really killed the Sens either.
