Briere Suspended Three Games

TORONTO – Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere has been suspended for three games and will forfeit $237,804.87 for cross checking New York Islanders player Frans Nielsen during NHL game #146 on October 30.

The incident occurred at 19:00 of the third period and Briere was assessed a major penalty for cross checking and a game misconduct.

Briere, who was suspended for two games on November 23, 2009, is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Accordingly, he forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (186). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Briere will miss the Flyers’ next three games -- tonight against Carolina, Thursday against the New York Rangers and Saturday at the New York Islanders. He is eligible to return Nov. 7 when the Flyers visit the Washington Capitals.

the 3rd game of the suspension is againt the isles on saturday. thats the reasoning behind the 3 games. i dont care what he got, or if he got suspended at all. im kinda pissed for the fans of the isles and flyers that he wont be playing. the ratings for that game probably wouldve been pretty decent for a hockey game on a saturday. i dont understand the logic of the NHL brass sometimes.

Cant remember last few seasons suspensions...looks like now the league gives a lot of suspensions.
I just saw his cheap shot, dirty move.

I thought he play warranted 2-3 games given that Briere doesn't have a clean record. But I was really hoping it would be less than three so that he would be eligible to play in Saturday's rematch between the teams, but I'm not at all surprised the league decided to hold him out of the lineup through that game. Then again, it would probably just be more disappoint as the Islanders likely wouldn't do sh*t to get retribution.

At least with Briere out it almost guarantees Carcillo will be dressed. The game still has potential.

I thought the suspension was okay. I don't have a problem with the NHL laying down the law with anything stick related. Personally, I didn't really think it was that bad. More than I thought he'd get, but no real issue with it.

$237,804.87...... wow... and James Harrison wants to quit the NFL over a $75,000 fine. I have no problem with this suspension.

The 3 should be for skating away as fast as he could afterward.

If you intentionally try to injure someone with a stick, a suspension is in your future. Since Wiz got suspended for making a gesture, I would say anything less than 2 here would've pissed me off.

Pretty cheap move by Briere. I certainly don't like to see stuff like that, but at least it creates bad blood. Three games seems a bit steep, but the NHL has set its own bar too high.

It's a bit more than I expected, but way more than nessecary. The hit was prett cheap, but it was nothing major. I don't understand why everyone is so soft these days.
