Brent Seabrook Signs Extension With Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a five-year contract extension with defenseman Brent Seabrook.

"Brent is a very important member of our organization and we are looking forward to him being part of a core group that will be a contender for many years to come, Blackhawks Vice President/General Manager Stan Bowman said. “We have been fortunate to have Brent as part of our family since he was a teenager and we are proud to be able to announce this news today."

Seabrook, 25, ranks 13th in Blackhawks franchise history among defenseman, and second among all active Blackhawks, with 452 regular-season games played over parts of six National Hockey League seasons. He has registered 143 assists, 13th all-time by a Blackhawks blueliner, and 177 points, 16th among Chicago defensemen, since his NHL debut in 2005. He has also paced club defensemen in hits in each of the last four campaigns.

“The Blackhawks are the only organization I’ve ever played for, and I’ve been a part of something very special in Chicago over the last six seasons,” said Seabrook. “I’m excited to continue being a part of this group, playing in the United Center and making our fans proud.”

Originally selected by the Blackhawks with the 14th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Seabrook netted a career-high four goals and added seven assists in 22 postseason contests while helping Chicago to the 2010 Stanley Cup Championship. He ranked ninth in the Playoffs with a +9 plus/minus rating and ranked second in the NHL with 81 hits. Seabrook’s 23 career postseason points (5G, 18A) share eighth in franchise history for a defenseman despite just 39 games played over the last two years.

A native of Tsawassen, British Columbia, Seabrook notched one assist and a +2 plus/minus rating en route to a Gold Medal with Team Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. He also represented his country at the 2006 World Championships, 2004 & 2005 World Junior Championships, and 2003 World U-18 Championships.

Seabrook currently ranks third on the Blackhawks with a career-high 29 assists, and shares fifth with a career-best 33 points, both tops among club blueliners. He ranks 17th in the NHL this season with an average of 24:27 of ice time per game and currently ranks fourth among league defensemen with 169 hits.

Awesome news. Big, physical D-man that can eat minutes. Has a big shot if there's an open lane but is mostly moving the puck to someone down low. Hawks solidifying their young talent for the future.

Good news. I can't wait until it's finally announced so I'll be able to stop face-palming myself half to death at all the retarded trade rumors surrounding him recently.

Huge overpayment, in my books. Just after they got out of cap trouble, too.

5 years at $29 million. More than Keith makes, which is a bit ridiculous. Seabrook is definitely a tier behind Keith, and neither of them has had a particularly good year this year.

I think the Hawks pay way too much for their top 4 compared to what they get out of them, and that contracts like these are costing the Hawks depth, and ultimately, wins.

while i agree with you, i'd be remiss if i didn't bring up the irony of a Canucks fan trying to tell us how to win... hahahaha.

More than I wanted to pay for him but at least he's not going anywhere and Seabrook is more worth that than the 7 mil for a useless turd like Campbell.

His cap hit is higher than Keith's but Keith still makes more money (he has one of those "special" contracts that were a big topic last off-season).

I think they got him for a fair value and that plenty of other teams would have easily paid $6m per year for him, but of course because it's the most recent star/core player the Hawks have signed, we're going to be overwhelmed with "overpayment, cap hell, ect." even though this contract isn't the problem. Campbell, Hjalmarsson, and Bolland, on the other hand...

well it'll only eat up $2 million of the $4 million that the hawks had taken away this season due to the bonus overage last season.

all this means is sharp and hopefully hjalmarsson are gone during the offseason...too bad campbell's ***** ass won't be dealt........

well he's the most attractive (1 yr left at under $4 million) and also doesn't have any clauses so he can be sent anywhere with no "politics" involved...plus they could get a couple players for him to fill out the roster for next year and maybe beyond.

toews, kane, keith, and campbell aren't going anywhere as the first 3 have NMC's and campbell has a contract that maybe only montreal's dumbass general manager would take on...

9 Hawks (5 F, 4D) will account for approximately $47M against the cap next season.

Leaves abot $13M for the other 11 players on the roster.
