Brendan Witt Suspended Five Games

TORONTO – New York Islanders defenseman Brendan Witt has been suspended for five games, without pay, as a result of an elbowing incident during NHL game #910 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the National Hockey League announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Witt will forfeit $74,372.75. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

At 2:21 of the third period, Witt delivered a blow to the head area of Toronto forward Niklas Hagman. Hagman was injured on the play and did not return to the game. Officials assessed Witt a major penalty for elbowing and game misconduct on the play.

Witt will miss Saturday's game against Buffalo, March 2 against Colorado, March 5 against the New York Rangers, March 7 against New Jersey and March 8 against Phoenix. He will be eligible to return March 10 at Toronto.

Fair enough.

I actually thought he'd get and deserved more but I suppose it falls in line with the disciplinary trend the league has shown this year. They've just kinda forgotten that they were gonna come down hard on blatant shots to the head.

Thats what I thought too - but I'm trying to remember, Witt's not a repeat offender, is he? I know he had a one game suspension back in 2006, but that wasn't for something like this, I don't think. I know this shouldn't matter, but maybe he got 'only' 5 becuase he's not classified as a repeat offender.

Anyhow - I though 5 would be the minimum too, but I didn't think he'd get more than that.

Seems fair until compared to the Devils hit on Nielsen earlier this year that sidelined him for 6-8 weeks that went unpunished.

Hopefully two things happen because of this:

1. Leafs acquire a heavyweight who pounds Witt

2. Leafs vs. Islanders rivalry is reignited. (maybe Corson will come out of retirement and hoof Witt in the nuts).

Tell that to Mike Mottau. Im sorry for being a homer here but **** Colin Campbell. He's ****s the Islanders all the ****ing time. This is the third time an Islander player gets the "max" while other players around the league get slaps on the wrist. **** you Colin!

I think he got a 1 game suspension for fighting Scott Parker over the glass. Witt's first game as a Predator I believe.

I don't know about this. This didn't seem as bad as Pock's elbow but I guess this is fine if the league wants to really crack down on hits to the head.

I don't blame you for being upset I hate Lindros, Mottau should have had the same suspension too.

Witt may be traded by then and seriously, who is Toronto going to throw out there against him if he IS still here...Brad May? Antropov maybe? I'm not saying Witt is the second coming, but the Leafs have garbage on their team when it comes to fighting.

Mayers could probably fight Witt the a draw or maybe even win, but yea, your right.
toronto doesn't have anyone who would do anything.
And one of the only kids who shows any heart (Sifers) got sent down today.
