Brad May gets official try-out with Red Wings; will suit up vs Toronto on Friday

Veteran brawler Brad May gets tryout with Wings
Chris McCosky / The Detroit News
Detroit -- With back-to-back games coming up against the brawling Toronto Maple Leafs, the Red Wings picked up a little muscle Thursday.

They have extended a professional tryout to veteran winger Brad May. May will be in the lineup Friday against the Leafs.

"I know he provides a physical presence and I don't feel we have much of that," coach Mike Babcock said. "We've had Aaron Downey in the past but we didn't have any this year."

May, who will be 38 in November, finished last season with Toronto.

"The phone has been ringing off the hook for years, but there were no calls this summer," said May, an unrestricted free agent. "I am just happy to be on the ice, happy to have an opportunity."

No guarantees were offered; in fact, he's a long shot to accompany the team to Sweden.

"There are so many great young players coming up, you have to vie for your spot every year," May said. "But I am hopeful. Detroit is an Original Six team, a storied franchise, great players, great organization and it's my opportunity. I just have to be me and do what I can do. I still feel like I have a lot to offer."

May has 2,182 career penalty minutes in an NHL career that began in 1991 with Buffalo. In addition to Toronto, he also has played for Vancouver, Phoenix, Colorado and Anaheim.

He has 127 goals and 160 assists in 1,001 NHL games.

Its things like this that make me appreciate Mike Babcock. If it wasnt for him Detroit would have had no Bootland, Downey or May.

Good for May that someone came calling, and a nice admission by Babcock that his team is unfathomably soft. But if May wants any realistic shot of making the Wings, he should probably keep his gloves on since Ken Holland is still the one handing out the contracts.

This would have been awesome for the Wings......ten years ago. Seriously, as much as I love Brad May, the guy is washed up. The Detroit Red Wings are a joke. If they wanted to bring in toughness, as well as make a profit, they would have tried to sign Donald Brashear or Colton Orr.

He is just another Aaron Downey. Think about it realistically guys. They let Downey walk, McCarty walk, and say they need to give the young guys a chance. Then they sign guys like Bertuzzi, Williams and Eaves. They are just makin up excuses to not sign fighters. May will live out his Red Wing career as a Griffin. That is IF they even sign him. Look at the depth chart if you doubt me:

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom
Franzen - Filppula - Bertuzzi
Cleary - Draper - Ja. Williams
Maltby - Helm - Eaves
Leino - Abdelkader - Jer. Williams
May - Newbury

I dont see him jumping a whole lot of spots up the food chain.

Imo Guranteed fight for Brad May against the Leafs. The question is who? My guess if Exelby is playing it will be him.

I really hope brad gets into some scraps but even so I doubt Ken holland would like that and I bet he would be sent to the griffins but I hope not. Will just have to wait and see.
