Brad Marchand Suspended Five Games for Clipping

NEW YORK - Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has been suspended for five games and will forfeit $152,439.02 for clipping Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo during NHL Game #598 in Boston on Saturday, Jan. 7, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Marchand, who received a two-game suspension in March 2011, is classified as a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Accordingly, he forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (185). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 18:47 of the second period. Marchand received a major penalty for clipping and a game misconduct.

Marchand will miss games Jan. 10 vs. Winnipeg, Jan. 12 vs. Montreal, Jan. 14 at Carolina, Jan. 16 at Florida and Jan. 17 at Tampa Bay. He will be eligible to return Jan. 19 at New Jersey.

I've agreed with Shannahan up till now so I'm not going to question this one.
Sucks that he will miss Montreal.

I stopped reading at this...

Idiot. Anyways most of Shannahan's decisions have been bull but this seems quite reasonable.

Wow, 5 games??? I don't like the hit, it's definately a cheap shot but I still think 5 games is steep.

I figured 2-3 games, due to repeat, and he got of scot free on the slewfoot. So its good i guess,if it assauges the tender sensibilities of the pascifist crowd,im good with it. Lucky for depth,we'll probably still go 4-1 or 5-0 in his abscence. So good for the league i guess.

JFJ didn't really elbow there, RJ Umberger needs to keep his head up. There was no intent to injure on that play and it was a grey-area hit.

In before sarcastic comments regarding Shanahan's love affair for the Bruins...

Thought he'd get 2-3, 5 is a bit steep, oh well...

Well he is a repeat offender so thats probably why he got the five instead of maybe two or three. My issue with this hit is that Marchand had time to do several different things(move out of way, put shoulder into Salo's chest, put his own arms up for protection, etc)but he made the decision to go low, knee level. To me that shows intent. He decided to go that low now he pays for it. As for the sure to follow pissing match between B's fans and Canucks fans, I'm outta here.

I was thinking 2-3, but its also a reputation thing. If David Krejci did this, he probably would have stayed in the game.

Shanahan agrees with you. In the video, he repeatedly said that he viewed the hit as predatory, not instinctual, and gave pretty good evidence to show that's the case. I love the way the Bruins play, but HATE clipping/bailing on a hit/whatever you want to call it. This is one of the few times I agree with Shanahan.

Identical play by the same player in last year's Cup finals was penalized with a 2 minute penalty. That's it; no questions asked.
Now all of a sudden it's a 5 minute major, game misconduct, and 5 game suspension. God bless the NHL.

Brad Marchand upends Daniel Sedin Jun 8, 2011 ...
