Boston Signs Steve Begin

BOSTON, MA- Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed center Steve Begin to a one-year contract.

The 31-year-old Bégin is a veteran of 409 NHL regular season games and has tallied 47 goals, 39 assists and 482 penalty minutes in his NHL career. He has also notched four assists in 23 career playoff games, all with the Montreal Canadiens.

He finished the 2008-09 season with the Dallas Stars, after being traded from Montreal on February 26, 2009 in exchange for Doug Janik. In 62 games last year split between the Canadiens and the Stars, Begin notched 7-5=12 totals.

Bégin was originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the second round (40th overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-0, 192-pound native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec made his NHL debut on January 10, 1997 as a member of the Flames. He played portions of five seasons with Calgary before being traded with Chris Drury to the Buffalo Sabres for Rhett Warrener and Steven Reinprecht on July 3, 2003. Bégin was claimed off waivers by the Canadiens on October 3, 2003 before playing a game for Buffalo and spent the next four-plus seasons with the Habs.

As a member of the Canadiens, he skated in 226 regular season games and 23 playoff games, with 35-31=66 totals. He tallied career highs in games played, goals and assists during the 2005-06 season with 11-12=23 totals in 76 games played while playing under current Bruins head coach Claude Julien.

They would sign Steve Begin for 850 bucks. Just givin ya a hard time. I knew Dallas wouldn't be hangin on to him for long. Better to have him back in the East and he does add more toughness to the lineup.

You'll probably be seeing the word "scratch" next to his name pretty often next season...

"By signing Begin, GM Peter Chiarelli said that fourth-line center Stephane Yelle will not return. Begin will replace Yelle on the fourth line and serve in a penalty-killing role as well."

Sounds good to me.

Oh yeah, I forgot that Yelle is gone. Well this signing makes a lot more sense now. He's not as polished as Yelle, but he definitely adds more toughness to the 4th line.

Begin is not the type of guy that will make headlines for scoring abilities. He does the little thing asked of him decently enough though that he typically is well liked, works his ass off each and every shift, you guys will love him.

Former Canadien Steve Begin to the Boston media: "I'm on the right side now."

Good stuff. No more pre-game sword fights in the locker room.

Quite a few Boston fans disliked Steve Begin, it should be interesting to see how much they start liking him now that hes on their team.

I think Begin's a pretty good replacement for Yelle. The guy's a good team player and works real hard out there. Combine that with the occasional scrap and he sounds like a solid option for Boston's fourth line.

Yeah, I love what Begin brings to the table. Sure wish the Rangers would have made a move for him. Cheap contract. Good pickup for the B's.

nice cheap move that gives them a little more money to spend or keep available for injuries or the trade deadline in march.
