Boston Bruins Sign Marc Savard to Four-Year Deal

The Boston Bruins have signed center Marc Savard as an unrestricted free agent, it was announced today by Bruins Interim General Manager Jeff Gorton. Savard was signed to a four-year contract.

“Marc is one of the top playmaking centers in the game today,” said Gorton. “He will fit in well with the skill players we have on our team and the direction in which we are headed.”

Savard, who will turn 29 on July 17th, will enter his ninth NHL season and Boston becomes his fourth NHL team since he was drafted by the NY Rangers as their third pick, 91st overall, in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He played four seasons of junior hockey with Oshawa of the OHL with 132-281=413 totals and 269 penalty minutes in 239 career junior games and was only the third player in OHL history to twice win their scoring title.

The 5’10”, 195 lb. native of Ottawa, Ontario split his first two professional seasons between the NY Rangers and their AHL affiliate in Hartford before a June 26, 1999 trade to Calgary, where he broke into the NHL to stay. He remained with the Flames for three-plus seasons until going to Atlanta for Ruslan Zainullin on November 15, 2002 and has played the last two NHL years with the Thrashers.

Savard has scored 20+ goals on three occasions and last season he ranked ninth overall in the NHL scoring race with career-high totals of 28 goals and 69 assists for 97 points in 82 games.

What do you call Chara. He is the toughest Bruin I've seen in years.

forsberg21 07-01-2006 03:47 PM

and Savard can tend to be an aggressive player, 100 PIM's

Comparing Travis Green to Chara is like comparing stones to a mountain, figuratively and literally.

Boston did great here, too bad for Atlanta, they had a good thing going on Savards line with Kovalchuk and Hossa..

Congrats Steg

I didnt say that, i said he can tend to play aggressive.

Melkycano 07-01-2006 05:33 PM

Good, this signing makes me assume the B's will dump Zhamnov, the current 2nd line center, or trade him.

HordiBrusk29 07-01-2006 05:56 PM

Now the big question will be whether or not Savard can still put up big point totals without someone like Kovalchuk by his side.
