Boston Acquires Brian Rolston and Mike Mottau

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has acquired forward Brian Rolston and defenseman Mike Mottau from the New York Islanders in exchange for forward Yannick Riendeau and defenseman Marc Cantin.

The 39-year-old Rolston is a veteran of 1235 NHL games and has registered 339 goals and 407 assists for 746 points in his 19-year NHL career. The Flint, MI native has also appeared in 70 postseason contests where he compiled 19-12=31 totals and was a member of the 1995 Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils. With the Islanders this season, Rolston has skated in 49 games and recorded four goals and five assists for nine points.

Rolston has notched 20 or more goals seven times in his NHL career, most recently in 2009-10 as a member of the New Jersey Devils when he potted 20 in 80 games. This is Rolston’s second stint in Boston, as he appeared in 338 games for the Black & Gold from 1999-2004 where he registered 236 points on 101 goals and 135 assists. His best season statistically came during the 2005-06 season with the Minnesota Wild when he set career highs in goals, assists and points with 34-45=79 totals.

Rolston was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the first round (11th overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

A native of Quincy, MA, Mike Mottau has skated in 29 games for the Islanders this season and registered 0-2=2 totals. For his career, the 33-year-old has played in 307 NHL games with the Rangers, Flames, Devils and Islanders and has seven goals and 51 assists for 58 points. Mottau is a veteran of 17 NHL postseason contests and totaled two goals and two assists in those playoff games.

The 6’0, 193-pound Mottau attended Boston College for four years from 1996-2000 and played in 163 career games for the Eagles. He was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the seventh round (182nd overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

I read that it was along with Mike Motaua for a Canton and a Riendeau?

Riendeau absolutely blows, Cantin isn't much better.

Where will useless Rolston fit in? I don't see many spots open for him.

My guess is that Rolson is going to drift around on the third line until Peverley comes back from his injury. The Bruins have literally nobody in Providence who can fill in adequately for any of the injured NHLers.

I second what Burger said above, these call ups haven't really shown any spark. Cantin and Riendeau are just fill ins to make the deal. Mottau could be the biggest part of this switch. even considering the pick up of Zanon from the Wild.

for what they gave up it makes sense. Rolston can play wing or center and while he is nowhere near the player he was in the short term he can help. He also plays the point on the powerplay sometime. Corvo is not doing the job and Rolston might be able to fill in. Good depth moves on the d. They didn't hit any homeruns but they needed to do something for the long playoff run.

Hope he can show a little something. Won't be anything near the early 2000's production though.

I predict that the Bruins will waive Rolston once Peverley and Horton come back.

I think we can't waive players after the trade deadline?

Not an ideal acquisition but another veteran presence added to the line up for next to nothing.

Keep in mind, of his 4 goals, 2 are empty netters. Rolston is garbage. He can't hit, can't battle for pucks and his shot rarely finds the net (let alone goes in).

Mottau...just not an NHL defensemen, just plain bad. Total liability at all times on the ice.
