Blues Sign Goaltender Ty Conklin

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced Wednesday the club has signed free agent goaltender Ty Conklin.

“By signing Ty, we have deepened our goaltending position,” said Davidson. “Ty had a solid year last season and along with the job Chris (Mason) did for us, we look forward to having two solid goaltenders next season.”

Conklin, 33, played in 40 games for the Detroit Red Wings last season, posting a 25-11-2 record along with a 2.51 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. He recorded career-highs last season in games played (40), wins (25) and shutouts (6), which tied for sixth in the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Anchorage, Alaska native has backstopped 149 career NHL games, registering a 73-43-14 record, a 2.58 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.

Conklin was originally signed by Edmonton as an undrafted free agent on April 18, 2001.

Nice! Pretty good deal.

Only $1.3 million per year for Conklin, who is a solid backup goalie. I'm fine with that.

Chris Mason proved he can still be a legit #1 goaltender last year, so all we needed was a solid backup to start 25 games or so, and we got that guy with Conklin. He's the perfect fit for us and is a decent goalie.

The Blues have already solved their biggest need 2 hours into free agency, so I'm happy about that. Now all we have to focus on is possibly getting a puck-moving d-man.

So I guess it's a safe bet St. Louis will be participating in an outdoor game sometime soon?

Good deal for St. Louis - Conklin is the perfect guy to have as a backup. Good team player, knows his role, can step in and play 20+ games. He and Mason will make for a pretty good tandem next season for the Blues.

Haha I didn't even think about that. But yeah Conklin always plays in those. Good thinking - it's weird how that has happened.

Good signing by the Blues. Conklin is a very strong backup who can push Mason to play his best since the team will have a pretty reliable option to turn to. I think he'll fit in well with St. Louis.
