Blue Jackets Trade Jody Shelley to Sharks for Sixth Round Pick

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired a sixth round pick in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for left wing Jody Shelley, club General Manager Scott Howson announced tonight.

Shelley has appeared in 31 of Columbus’ 52 games this season and collected 44 penalty minutes. Signed by the Blue Jackets as a free agent on Jan. 31, 2001, he has registered 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points with 1,025 penalty minutes in 380 games during his NHL career. Shelley, who will turn 32 on February 7, is the franchise’s all-time leader in penalty minutes and stands tied with Rostislav Klesla for second in games played behind David Vyborny (519).

I wouldn't mind seeing "Shelley assigned to Worcester"

Seriously, I hope he gets more playing time there than in Columbus.

That's a great pick up for them. Maybe the Coyotes will bring Gratton up now.

I really hope Shelley gets some ice time with the Sharks. Any Hitchcock team is brutal.

Awesome move by the Sharks.

Finally they have a legit heavyweight to replace Parker. San Jose has guys like Murray, McLaren, Davison, and Clowe when he returns from his injury that can all scrap - but Shelley can now be their main guy. San Jose needed a heavy, and let's just hope that the Sharks play him. Since Doug Wilson went out of his way to find an enforcer, he better make Ron Wilson dress him!

It will be weird seeing Jody in a different jersey...

Columbus now looks pretty weak though unless they call up Konopka and Goertzen.

Jensen will be happy with this news... EDIT: Yep, he is. Just saw his post, haha.

That is awesome. It's nice to see another team buy into the enforcer role, I love it. It's spreading guys, the BJs are now left with OKT as their resident enforcer (that's right, Wolf just popped one there). Well the BJs are screwed, but when you trade for a guy like Shelley, you have to know that they are gonna use him often. This is good news for fighting.

Yah I figured it was only a matter of time before he got rid of Shelly. Well the central division just got a lot softer in the last 48 hours. Koci to the minors, & Shelley to SJ. I guess the wings aren't the softest team in that division

Too bad the Maple Leafs didn't get to San Jose first, as soon as they get an offer for Belak, you know he is out of town. Hopefully TO follows suit, aand sneds Belak packing to a team that can use him, maybe Florida?
